A Sarukuma writer’s firsthand visit to “Ikinari Dango Murasaki” in Yahata, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City. We’ve gathered family-friendly tips, access info, and business hours all in one place.

About the Shop

Hello, travelers!

I’m Binako, a writer for Sarukuma
and yes, I’m the kind of grown-up who unapologetically eats multiple boxed ice creams in one sitting!

Today, I’d love to introduce you to
“Ikinari Dango Murasaki,”
a charming little dumpling shop tucked away in Yahata, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City.

This neighborhood dumpling shop sits right next door to a private home,
and when I visited, regulars were happily recommending their favorites to friends:
“You’ve got to try this one โ€” it’s amazing!”

There’s parking for about 5 cars right in front of the shop.

A traditional bamboo steamer sits out front,
puffing out clouds of fragrant steam โ€” honestly, watching it is its own little form of relaxation.

Step inside, and you’re in for a surprise.

They sell home-style Japanese deli dishes too!
And at incredibly wallet-friendly prices.

The fridge in the back has even more deli items,
and plenty of customers come in just to stock up on these tasty side dishes.

And of course, the ikinari dango (Kumamoto’s beloved sweet potato dumplings) are super affordable too:
Double-Bean Dango โ€” 90 yen
White Bean Ikinari Dango โ€” 90 yen
Red Bean (Azuki) Ikinari Dango โ€” 90 yen
Sweet Potato Dango is normally 70 yen, but…
just 50 yen?! That’s almost too cheap!

Sweet Potato Korokke Dango โ€” 70 yen
Plain Red Bean Dango โ€” 70 yen
There’s a wonderful variety to try!

And the absolute must-try is…

Mame Dango (Bean Dumplings) โ€” 60 yen
These savory, lightly salted dumplings are packed with whole soybeans โ€”
the moment I saw them, I knew I had to buy some!

Recommended Menu

Here’s what I tried:
Red Bean (Azuki) Ikinari Dango โ€” 90 yen
Mame Dango (Bean Dumplings) โ€” 60 yen

I couldn’t wait โ€” I devoured them right in the car!

Hold it up to the light, and oh, what a beautiful sight.

Plump soybeans peek through the soft, doughy shell.

So good it almost brought tears to my eyes.

The bite of soybean meets the chewy, mochi-like dough.
Gently steamed, the soybeans burst softly with each bite โ€”
this combination is just irresistible.

The subtle saltiness brings out the natural sweetness of the wheat dough beautifully.

Next up:
the classic ikinari dango.

Just look at all that red bean filling from above!

The thin dough wraps around perfectly balanced (not too sweet) red bean paste โ€” absolutely delicious.
The sweet potato slice inside is just the right thickness โ€” easy to eat
yet wonderfully satisfying in size.

Next time, I’ll definitely have to try the deli dishes too…
