2020.10.22

A SaruKuma writer’s firsthand visit to QUON Chocolate Kumamoto Store, located in Kamitori-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. We’ve included family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.
Hello, travelers!
This is Rikotama, your SaruKuma writer!
Today, we’re heading to a delightful chocolate boutique in Kamitori-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
QUON Chocolate Kumamoto Store.

You’ll find it near the Suidocho tram stop, right across from Tetori Tenmangu Shrine—a perfect stop while exploring downtown Kumamoto!
At first glance, you might mistake it for a chic lifestyle boutique, but surprise—
it’s actually a specialty chocolate shop!
Who knew Kumamoto had such a stylish chocolaterie tucked away here? It was a wonderful discovery!

Here’s what makes QUON Chocolate truly special: their chocolatiers include people with disabilities, working mothers, and a beautifully diverse team—all crafting top-quality chocolates with no compromise on excellence.
The name QUON (久遠 / Kuon) comes from an ancient Japanese word meaning “eternity”—the endless flow of time.
What a beautiful concept for a chocolate shop!

Step inside, and you’re greeted by an utterly charming, stylish interior!
During my visit, the shop was decked out in adorable Halloween decorations.

The display cases are filled with all kinds of artisan chocolate confections.
You’ll even find chocolates inside an old-school candy machine—how cute is that?

For chocolate connoisseurs, each bar clearly labels its cacao origin and percentage:
High Cacao Series – ¥680

QUON Chocolate’s signature item is their famous Chocolate Terrine!
※ When I hear “terrine,” I usually picture a savory loaf of minced meat or vegetables set in jelly… but a chocolate terrine? That was a first for me!

And yes—it really does look like a terrine!
I was lucky enough to taste the “Berry Berry” sample, and…

I had to buy one!
“Berry Berry Terrine” – ¥230
The first bite explodes with bright, tangy berry flavor balanced by rich, sweet cacao!
Real strawberry pieces inside add a lovely texture. Absolutely delicious!

They also offer a seasonal-limited “Supreme Ice Cream” for ¥350—a tempting treat!

The gift boxes and packaging are absolutely adorable—perfect for souvenirs!
They also offer domestic shipping (takkyubin) services!

PayPay and major credit cards are accepted, making payment hassle-free for international visitors.

Look what we found—a real chocolate drink!
It’s called “Chocolat Chaud”!
Hot: ¥380 and Iced: ¥300—though on this day, only the iced version was available.

I tried the Iced Chocolat Chaud (Malaysia 62%)—and wow!
Rich, deep cacao flavor—
yet refreshingly clean on the finish!
It goes down so smoothly. On a warm day, I downed the whole cup in no time!
And the chopped chocolate pieces inside!
They add the perfect crunchy accent.
Treat yourself to this luxurious cup—you’ll feel rich and indulgent for sure!
