Introducing NIJI-SUN Kumamoto
Hello travelers! This is Binako, a frequently-surfacing writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m introducing a sweet little spot located in Ansei-machi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City:
NIJI-SUN Kumamoto.

NIJI-SUN Kumamoto is located on the first floor of Tsutaya Books Kumamoto Sannenzaka. A heads-up for visitors: the shop isn’t inside the bookstore itself but along the path leading to it, so don’t get lost wandering around Carino like some shoppers do!

Step inside and you’re greeted by a glass showcase lined with vibrant, jewel-like fruit sandwiches and equally colorful donuts — a feast for the eyes before you even take a bite.

The fruit sandwiches (702 yen) come in different cream styles — pure fresh cream and Calpis cream — so you can pick whichever suits your mood. (Note: the fruit sandwiches are NOT gluten-free or vegan.)
Lucky shoppers might also spot 30% OFF items on the day they visit. With prices that gentle on the wallet, it’s hard not to overbuy!

The baked donuts (446 yen) are gluten-free and vegan, making them a fantastic option for travelers with allergies or dietary restrictions. With so many varieties to try, you’ll want to taste them all. As someone who personally avoids wheat and animal products as much as possible, my eyes were absolutely sparkling at this lineup.

This beauty is the glazed baked donut (608 yen). The donuts are sold frozen, which is perfect if you have a long way home or want to bring some back to your hotel.

They also offer gift boxes — perfect for omiyage (souvenirs) or a thoughtful treat for friends.
Anyone want to send some my way…? (Just kidding!)

They also had a chocolate terrine on offer. A terrine made with rich soy milk? Now THAT sparked my curiosity.

Smart bonus: because the donuts are frozen, you don’t even need an extra ice pack — they help keep the fruit sandwiches chilled on the way home. Eco-friendly genius… maybe? (laughs)

First, I tried a half-cut fruit sandwich. Loaded with strawberries and kiwi, even the half size was deeply satisfying.
Biting into the cloud-like cream that practically spills out, mixed with the gentle tartness of the fresh fruit — this is the blissful moment a fruit sandwich was made for.

Next up: kinako (roasted soybean flour) and black sesame donuts.

I couldn’t wait, so I devoured them while they were still half-frozen — classic Binako move.
Moist yet refreshingly cool. The sweetness is gentle, which lets the toasty kinako aroma really shine.
The warm, nutty flavor of kinako fills your mouth and feels like a little hug from within.

And here’s the black sesame — a flavor that hits all my favorite buttons.
Rich upon rich upon RICH black sesame fragrance. The little pop-pop crunch of sesame seeds against the chewy, hearty donut base is incredible.
Made with rice flour, these donuts are surprisingly filling — just two left me completely satisfied.

Whenever you’re out exploring downtown Kumamoto, this is a stop worth making. NIJI-SUN Kumamoto was a truly soothing little sweets sanctuary.
