2020.10.07

A Sarukuma writer’s firsthand report on “Shirakawa Park” located in Kusaba-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. We’ve gathered family-friendly highlights, access info, and opening hours all in one place.
Hello there!
This is Rikotama, your Sarukuma writer!
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to
Kusaba-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, home to
Shirakawa Park (白川公園)!

You’ll find it right along Route 3, next to the Kumamoto Chuo Police Station!

Right next door, there’s also the Kumamoto City Chuo Community Center!

Beside the community center, you’ll spot a handy vending machine — perfect for grabbing a cold drink on a hot Kumamoto day!

Check out the stylishly designed restrooms!
There’s even an accessible/multipurpose restroom available.
Note: there’s no diaper-changing station inside.

There’s one drinking fountain spot!
It has both tall and low taps, so even little ones can easily get a drink ♪

You’ll also find one large covered bench area — perfect for shade on sunny days!

Regular benches are scattered everywhere throughout the park! (*^▽^*)

There are several Japanese maple (momiji) trees too,
so you can enjoy beautiful autumn foliage in the fall season ♬

Standing proudly in the center of the park is a magnificent symbolic camphor tree (kusunoki) — a true presence!

The pathways around the park are perfect for walking or jogging!
Why You’ll Love It Here

Shirakawa Park actually features playground equipment specifically designed for toddlers!!

Here’s an adorable bear-themed mini jungle gym ♪
Kids can climb up the netted ropes and even try their hand at what looks like a mini bouldering wall!

There’s a charming caterpillar slide and ride-on toys too!
The toddler play area is enclosed by a fence, so little ones can play safely (*^-^*)
On the day I visited, a sweet little girl was going down the caterpillar slide over and over again ♡
I was already amazed to find such a spacious park right in the middle of the city,
but discovering the playground equipment was an even bigger surprise!!!
While there’s no parking lot, this is a wonderful spot to visit if you’re traveling around downtown Kumamoto by public transportation!
