Hello there!
This is Asukarando, your Sarukuma writer.
Today I’m introducing
Takaba, Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture‘s very own
“Takaba Castle Ruins Park (Takabajo Ato Koen)”.

The park has slopes at all kinds of angles, so you can pick whichever incline suits you for a smooth, fun ride.
And yes—adults can absolutely join in the fun too!
Since the park sits on elevated ground, there’s usually a nice breeze. It can feel refreshing in some seasons, but a little chilly in others, so it’s a good idea to bring an extra layer just in case.
Because this site is the remains of an old Japanese castle, you’ll also spot stone pavements and an ancient well—a window into the area’s history.
Why You’ll Love It Here

Every time I come, I’m sore the next day (mostly because I don’t exercise enough…), but the
grass sledding here is just too much fun!
Just climbing back up the slopes might even give you a hip-toning workout.
There are two parking areas.

The lower lot (at the entrance to the climbing path) has space for around a dozen cars.

If you arrive early, the upper lot (at the top of the slope shown in the photo) has about 4 spaces.
Since you’ll likely be carrying sleds and other gear,
the upper lot is recommended,
but if it’s full, you can drop off your stuff and park down below before walking up.
There are two restroom areas.

The first one is next to the smaller parking area.
Both Western-style and Japanese-style toilets are available.
By the way, there’s also a vending machine right beside it.
The second one is located deeper inside the park.
There’s one water fountain, located beside the parking area near the park entrance.

You’ll find shaded spots, benches, and even a few stone tables and chairs scattered around.
You can manage without a picnic mat, but since seating is limited, bringing one is a smart move.
Here’s the stone table and chair setup.
Tucked under the shade of trees with a beautiful view—it’s so relaxing!
You’ll find yourself wanting to linger here for hours.
There’s a river beyond the park with a bridge, and the view from there is stunning.
A walking path loops around the area, so a full circuit makes for a nice workout.
Strolling among the natural trees is a real treat.
Right near the park, you’ll also find Amby Kumamoto, a shopping center,
so I recommend grabbing a bento or some snacks beforehand for a relaxed full-day plan.

For grass sleds, this style is the way to go.
They work in lots of places, so having one on hand opens up plenty of fun.
You can find them at home improvement stores.

And here are the other rules to keep in mind.
Let’s all follow them so everyone can have a great time.
