Hello, fellow travelers! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
This is Yuzu, your Sarukuma writer.

Today, I’m excited to introduce you to a wonderful little ikinari dango shop located in Tsuboi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City โ€”
ใ€Ikinariya Watanabeใ€‘ โ˜†

You’ll find it along National Route 3, just a bit past the Jogyoji intersection on your left as you head out from the city center ๐Ÿ˜€

There’s a clear sign right on Route 3, so it’s easy to spot ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

You can also reach the shop by passing through the torii gate on the road that runs from Nio-san Street toward Route 3 โ€” just walk a little further and you’ll see the sign โ˜†

If you approach from the Route 3 side, the shop is right there โ€” super easy to find โ™ช

There’s also parking for about 4 cars, which is a real lifesaver if you’re traveling with kids ๐Ÿ˜€

I went in expecting just ikinari dango, but it turns out they also serve shaved ice and karaage (Japanese fried chicken) too!

Time to head inside!

Sorry the photo is a bit blurry โ€” there was a plastic curtain in the way! ๐Ÿ’ฆ
They also have soft serve ice cream, takoyaki, and sweet potato tempura ๐Ÿฆ

With such a wide menu, even families with different tastes will all find something to love ๐Ÿ˜€

They also have other locations: Josaien, Aso Kumamoto Airport, and JR Kumamoto Station branches.

Recommended Menu Items

The ikinari dango lineup, from left to right: purple sweet potato, black bean, and matcha.
Not pictured here, but they also offer white bean paste (shiroan).
Shiroan ikinari dango is pretty rare, isn’t it? โ˜†

And there are also special varieties: zunda (sweet edamame paste), chestnut, and cheese.
Zunda was sold out on my visit, so I went with chestnut instead.

Here’s a great tip you might not know โ€”
ikinari dango can actually be frozen! ๐Ÿ˜€

A true lifesaver for busy households โ™ช

Keep some in the freezer, and you’ll always have a treat ready when hungry family members come home ๐Ÿ˜„

Ikinari dango is incredibly satisfying to eat โ€”
perfect for growing kids who’ll definitely love it!
They’re pretty large too, so younger kids can share one easily โ˜†

Pricing depends on quantity:
1ใ€œ9 pieces: 200 yen each
10 or more: 150 yen each
Zunda, chestnut, cheese: 250 yen each

Doesn’t this paper wrapping feel wonderfully nostalgic?
I personally love the smell of this kind of traditional paper packaging ๐Ÿ˜
Anyone else feel the same? ๐Ÿ˜‡

This time, I picked up the classic ikinari dango and the chestnut dango ๐Ÿ˜€

First up, the classic ikinari dango โ˜†
The balance between the generous chunk of sweet potato and the sweet red bean paste is absolutely artistic ๐Ÿ˜†

The chewy, mochi-like outer skin,
a subtle hint of salt, and the perfect harmony of sweet potato and anko sweetness โ€”
it’s an absolutely incredible treat ๐Ÿ˜

This truly is Kumamoto’s beloved soul food! โ˜†

Next up โ€” the chestnut dango โ™ชโ™ช
On top of the regular ikinari dango sits a generous topping of chopped chestnuts ๐Ÿ˜š The added texture is incredible โ€”
there’s no way this could be anything but delicious!

Pure happiness ๐Ÿ˜ โ€” that sums it up perfectly!
It’s even been featured on a Japanese TV show โ˜†

Be sure to drop by and treat yourself to a moment of pure joy too! ๐Ÿฅฐ
