Montre Cafe: Hearty Sizzling Doria at a Charming Retro Cafe in Kumamoto City
2020.07.01

A Sarukuma writer’s firsthand visit to “Montre,” a beloved retro cafe in Oe, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.
Hello, everyone!
It’s Gussan, a writer for Sarukuma!
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to “Montre,” a wonderful retro cafe located in Oe, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City.
There’s a parking lot right in front of the cafe, but be warned β it’s such a popular spot that it’s almost always full during lunchtime!
But don’t give up if the front lot is full β there’s actually a second parking area in the back!
If you’re coming from the Suizenji direction, just turn left right before the cafe.
You’ll find the back parking lot just behind the cafe. Look for the word “Montre” written on the concrete so you don’t miss it!
Note that there are stairs at the entrance.
Step inside and you’re greeted by a wonderfully retro brick interior β the kind of nostalgic vibe that feels uniquely Japanese.
Seating includes both counter spots and tables.
The space is on the cozier side, so it might be a bit challenging with very young children. That said, kids around age 5 and up should do just fine here.
During our visit, the crowd was a lovely mix of local office workers and couples enjoying a relaxed meal.
Recommended Menu
Here’s the lunch menu β and the best part? Every lunch set comes with a drink included!
There are also quick options for those who are short on time.
As you’d expect from a classic Japanese kissaten (retro coffee shop), the coffee menu is wonderfully extensive!
Got a sweet tooth? You’ll be thrilled with the dessert lineup, including parfaits and frappes!
Bacon Pizza Lunch β Β₯800. Loaded with cheese and absolutely irresistible!
Meat Doria Lunch β Β₯800.
This baked rice gratin practically overflows the plate! I’ve never seen a doria this generously sized β it’s a huge serving!
The daily special, Golden Curry Doria Lunch β Β₯800.
What makes it “golden”? A beautifully runny egg perched right on top of the curry doria. Now it all makes sense!
Whenever I’m craving doria, the very first place that comes to mind is Montre! It’s also a fantastic choice if you’ve got a big appetite to satisfy.
