Tagayasu: A Hidden-Gem Izakaya in Kumamoto Perfect for Families [Kumamoto City, Chuo Ward, Kuhonji]
2020.06.25

A Sarukuma writer visits “Tagayasu” in person and shares the full scoop. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.
Today we’re introducing
Tagayasu, a charming izakaya tucked away in Kuhonji, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City.
There’s parking for about 7 cars right in front of the restaurant — a real plus if you’re driving.
The welcoming entrance to the shop.
At the counter, we spotted an autograph from Yasuhisa Hara, the creator of the hit manga “Kingdom” — a fun discovery for anime and manga fans visiting Japan!
Unfortunately, my photo skills failed me and the face of the main character “Shin” didn’t make it into the shot… rookie mistake!
One of the things that makes Tagayasu so appealing is the lively, buzzing atmosphere throughout the restaurant.
While there are no fully private rooms, the partitioned tatami seating areas offer a cozy sense of privacy — a fantastic way to experience traditional Japanese floor-style dining.
There’s also a spacious tatami room, making this a great spot for families with children.
My 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter playing under the table (yes, her T-shirt is on backwards…).
Whoops — looks like one of them got their eyes covered in the photo!
There are also round-table tatami seats and even a loft-style seating area, so you can enjoy a variety of atmospheres in one visit!
Recommended Menu Items
Check out the chef’s recommendations — everything looks absolutely mouthwatering!
The menu here is so extensive that it can be hard to choose, though I usually end up ordering the same favorites every time (don’t we all? haha).
Tagayasu also offers great value for money — another reason it’s such a beloved local spot.

The selection of small plates and izakaya-style snacks is fantastic.
And the drink menu is impressively varied too — perfect for sampling Japanese sake, shochu, or a cold local beer!
Tofu salad with crispy jako (baby sardines) ¥480 and karaage-style fried octopus ¥480 — both winners, no doubt about it!
French fries ¥380 — the kids couldn’t keep their hands off these!
Chicken tataki (lightly seared chicken) ¥480 — the perfect pairing for a chilled drink!
Sweet potato sticks ¥480 — irresistibly crunchy and totally addictive! One of my absolute favorites!
The large pizzas are made with hand-crafted dough and are all just ¥500 — an absolute must-try!
Mentaiko (spicy cod roe) cream udon ¥580 — reliably delicious every single time.
Takeout is also available, so families can enjoy these signature flavors back at the hotel or rental too!
