Welcome to Umenohana Kumamoto

Hello travelers! It’s Sashimi, your guide from Sarukuma. ٩( ᐛ )و

Today I’m taking you to Izumi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City, to a beautiful kaiseki-style restaurant called
【Umenohana Kumamoto】.

It’s just a 2-minute drive from Yume Town Hamasen shopping mall — a serene Japanese restaurant specializing in handmade tofu and yuba (delicate soy milk skin). A perfect spot to experience authentic, healthy Japanese cuisine. ♪

The entrance immediately sets a refined, upscale tone — you can feel the calm and elegance from the moment you step in. ♪

The parking lot is spacious and easy to use, with room for around 30 cars.
If you’re driving a rental car in Japan for the first time, this kind of generous parking is a real relief! (lol)

This time we were seated in a lovely room with a view of the garden — perfect for soaking in the peaceful Japanese atmosphere. ♪

There are also private rooms available, which can be reserved depending on the course you choose. Just ask the staff when you book — they’re happy to help!

Recommended Menu at Umenohana Kumamoto

My go-to order is the Ume Lunch (¥2,000).
Heads up — this set is only available on weekday lunches, so plan accordingly!

There are plenty of other kaiseki (traditional multi-course) options too!

And yes — there’s a kids’ menu too, and it looks surprisingly luxurious! Great news for families traveling with little ones. ♪

Here comes the Ume Lunch! ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

The meal opens with a tofu salad, chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard), and Mineoka tofu — a creamy specialty made with fresh cream and milk rather than soy. It’s silky, mildly sweet, and totally unique.

Next up: nama-fu dengaku (grilled wheat gluten cakes) and crispy fried yuba.

I have to confess — I’m absolutely obsessed with this nama-fu dengaku. Honestly, it’s the main reason I keep coming back to Umenohana (lol). The chewy, mochi-like fu is topped with two kinds of miso: konoha-miso (leaf-shaped sweet miso) and yuzu-miso (citrusy miso). Two bites, two completely different flavors — pure magic.

The golden-yellow piece is yuba — I’m a huge yuba fan! ♪

Then arrives the scallop takikomi gohan (scallop-flavored rice cooked with seasonal ingredients) and a clear soup. ٩( ᐛ )و

Dessert was soy milk ice cream drizzled with kuromitsu (Japanese black sugar syrup). A perfect finale. ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

Needless to say, every single dish was delicious! The portions are just right — not too heavy, not too light. I left completely satisfied.

Takeout is also available — perfect for grabbing souvenirs or treats for your hotel room!

An appetizer set to pair with sake or beer — sounds great! I’ll definitely be back to grab one. (^^)

They even offer an Okuizome zen — a traditional ceremonial meal celebrating a baby’s 100th day. Such a beautiful option for family milestones! ♪

I didn’t get to feature them all this time, but the kaiseki courses come in many varieties and they all look amazing. Check the official website for the full lineup. ٩( ᐛ )و

See you next time — bye for now! ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡
