[CLOSED] Gelateria SAPEUR — Artisan Gelato & Freshly-Baked Waffle Cones in Minami Ward, Kumamoto City
2023.04.25

Welcome to Gelateria SAPEUR
Hi everyone, this is Gussan, a writer for Sarukuma!
Today I’m excited to introduce you to a wonderful gelato shop located in Tamukae, Minami Ward, Kumamoto City —
Gelateria SAPEUR.
Opening on April 29, 2023, this shop’s pride is its artisan gelato made with carefully selected ingredients from Kyushu, paired with freshly-baked, butter-scented waffle cones.
I was lucky enough to be invited for a sneak peek before the official opening, and of course I rushed over with a smile!
Gelateria SAPEUR is located along the Hamasen Bypass, right next to the Marumitsu pachinko parlor.
It sits beside a coin laundry and a FamilyMart convenience store, with plenty of shared parking available.
Thanks to its location along Hamasen, it’s an easy stop while you’re out shopping or sightseeing in Kumamoto.
The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the warm, buttery aroma of waffle cones being hand-baked on the spot.
And then your eyes land on the colorful gelato display — it looks absolutely irresistible.
Here’s a fun fact: this vibrant gelato is actually crafted by a long-established Japanese kappo restaurant in Nagasaki with a 65-year history.
(That heritage somehow makes it taste even more refined!)
At Gelateria SAPEUR, you’ll find 9 gelato flavors at any given time, including signature classics and seasonal creations.
The lineup rotates every one to two months, so there’s always something new to try.
You’ll even spot unique flavors like “Cassata” and “Asparagus” — yes, asparagus gelato!
For little ones (and the young at heart), there are kid-friendly options like “Reward Milk”, “Shiranui” (a sweet Japanese citrus), and “Himenoka Strawberry”.
Just look at how stylish and adorable the gelato cups are!
They’re definitely Instagram-worthy.
(All gelato is served in cups.)
Gelato Pricing
Single — 400 yen
Double — 580 yen
Triple — 700 yen

(For elementary school children and younger)
It’s so nice that they offer a kids size!

Hand-baked waffle cone — 60 yen
Organic granola — 100 yen
Organic honey — 80 yen
Good news for international visitors: the shop accepts cash, credit cards, electronic money, and a wide range of cashless payment options.
And the takeaway packaging? Absolutely charming.
It’s perfect for gifts during the warmer months ahead!
Online shop sales are also planned.
There are also some original branded items on display, although sales details are still to be announced.
The stylish enamel pin badges would fit right in at a Sarukuma marketplace.
While Gelateria SAPEUR is primarily a takeaway gelato shop, there’s also a counter where you can enjoy your treat inside.
It’s standing-style though, so families with young children may find it more comfortable to eat in the car.
Must-Try Gelato Flavors at Gelateria SAPEUR
The gelato at Gelateria SAPEUR is crafted with seasonal ingredients sourced from Nagasaki and across Kyushu.
Not only do they focus on premium ingredients, but they also obsess over freshness and flavor — making each scoop a truly luxurious treat.
This time, I had the pleasure of sampling almost every flavor on the menu!
From left to right (all ordered as doubles):
Praline & Chocolate · Yame Matcha
The Praline & Chocolate is loaded with three kinds of crunchy nut praline mixed into rich chocolate gelato — a dream come true for chocolate and nut lovers.
The Yame Matcha (green tea from Yame, Fukuoka) features a beautiful vibrant green color with a deep, fragrant matcha aroma that fills your mouth.
Shiranui · Asparagus
The Shiranui flavor uses fertilizer-free Shiranui citrus, with a sweet-tart taste so fresh it feels like you’re eating shaved fruit straight from the tree.
The Asparagus gelato comes drizzled with a homemade lemon sauce when you order in-store. The vegetable’s flavor pairs beautifully with the bright lemon — even kids who don’t love their veggies might be tempted to try it!
Himenoka Strawberry · Reward Milk
The Himenoka Strawberry uses freshly-picked Yumenoka strawberries from Nagasaki, blending the perfect balance of sweetness and tartness.
Reward Milk is made with milk from the foothills of Mount Unzen, offering a clean, refined taste with a gentle milky sweetness.
Cassata · Pistachio
Cassata is a traditional Italian frozen dessert, generously packed with cheese, nuts, and dried fruits like figs — a truly indulgent grown-up treat.
The Pistachio gelato uses Sicilian pistachios roasted in-house, delivering a rich, fragrant flavor that pistachio lovers will adore.
And here’s a special treat — Gelateria SAPEUR’s waffle cones are handmade right in the shop (60 yen).
They roll the freshly-baked dough by hand and serve it warm.
How rare is it to find a shop where you can enjoy waffle cones straight off the iron?
Dip your gelato into the warm cone and enjoy a delightful two-in-one experience.
There are also tempting toppings like organic honey (80 yen) and organic granola (100 yen).
Both pair wonderfully with the gelato — absolutely delicious.
If you check their Instagram, you’ll discover stories about the local producers and the shop’s deep commitment to quality ingredients.
It’s well worth a follow!
With Kumamoto’s hot summer just around the corner, why not make Gelateria SAPEUR your go-to gelato spot?
With its adorable packaging, it’s also a perfect souvenir for friends or family back home.
The shop stays open until 9:00 PM, so feel free to drop by during your travels!
