📌 What you’ll learn in this article
A Sarukuma writer visits Hikari no Mori Coffee, a relaxed café in Hikari-no-Mori, Kikuyo Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto. Price range: from 1,089 yen. We cover kid-friendly perks, access, and opening hours.

About Hikari no Mori Coffee

Hello, travelers! This is Gussan, writer for Sarukuma.

Today I’m taking you to Hikari-no-Mori in Kikuyo Town, just outside Kumamoto City, to explore Hikari no Mori Coffee — a stylish café that opened on April 24, 2023.

There’s a roomy parking lot right out front — a real bonus if you’re traveling Kumamoto by rental car.
One of the most common worries when café-hopping in Japan is, “Will I find a parking space? Will it be packed inside?” At Hikari no Mori Coffee, parking is generous and the interior is wonderfully spacious. When the weather is nice, the terrace seating looks like the perfect spot to soak up some sunshine.
The aisles are wide enough for strollers, so families with little ones can roll right in.
Kid-sized chairs are available, but they don’t have safety belts — so if your toddler is still wobbly, bring your stroller along just in case.
Inside, you’ll find a mix of seating styles — sofa-style booths on one side of the table,
tables for two and four,
and cozy sofa seats near the terrace.

Here’s a fun bonus: Hikari no Mori Coffee offers free manga reading!
Around 1,000 manga titles line the shelves — from beloved classics to the latest releases. A great way to dip into Japanese pop culture while you sip.
Every seat also comes with power outlets and Wi-Fi, so digital nomads and travelers catching up on photos are very welcome here. The whole vibe says, “Stay as long as you’d like.”

Recommended Menu at Hikari no Mori Coffee

Ordering is done via tablet, which is a lifesaver if you can’t decide — and the picture menu makes it easy for international visitors too.
We came for sweets this time, but the café opens at 8:00 a.m., so it’s a perfect breakfast stop as well.

Let me walk you through the menu.
Lunch options include the
Omurice Set (1,089 yen, tax incl.) and Napolitan Pasta Set (1,309 yen, tax incl.),
plus a Beauty Salad Box (1,199 yen, tax incl.), limited to just 10 servings per day.
Sandwich lovers can choose from
Ham Sandwich (605 yen), Egg Sandwich (605 yen), Corned Beef Sandwich (737 yen), all tax included,
and there’s an impressive lineup of bread-based dishes too — hot sandwiches, pizza toast, hot dogs, and Japanese-style fried bread (age-pan).
Pasta dishes come with salad and a baguette: Mentaiko Cream Pasta (1,199 yen) and Carbonara (1,199 yen). For something sweet, try the Danish Soft (693 yen), Custard Pudding (495 yen), or Shiratama Anmitsu — soft mochi balls with red bean paste (605 yen), all tax included.
There are also great-value dessert sets that come with a drink.
Photo-worthy drinks include the signature Choco Cookie Café Latte Frosccino and the summer-only Mango Berry Frosccino — both colorful and Instagram-ready.
Single-serve coffees and soft drinks are available too, so kids and non-coffee drinkers are well covered.
This is the Afternoon Dessert Set (1,089 yen, tax incl.).
Available from 2:00 p.m., it includes soft-serve ice cream, fresh fruit, macarons, and cake — all on one plate. With a drink included, this much for just over 1,000 yen is an absolute steal.
Shiratama Anmitsu (605 yen single, 825 yen as a set, tax incl.) — a classic Japanese dessert with chewy mochi balls, fruit, and sweet bean paste.
Cake Set — Coffee Banana (550 yen single, 770 yen as a set, tax incl.).
Blue Sky Frosccino (638 yen, tax incl.) — designed to capture the feeling of a Kumamoto summer with blue skies, earth, and bright sun. The “earth” layer at the bottom is rich chocolate sauce.

Hikari no Mori Coffee is the kind of place where you can truly relax — whether you’re stopping in for lunch, an afternoon tea break, or a quiet hour with a book. Diaper-changing stations and kids’ tableware are available too, so it’s a fantastic option for families exploring the Hikari-no-Mori area.
