Introducing Soba-dokoro Yama no Sachikan

Hello again, travelers!
This is Uentsu, writer for Sarukuma.

Today we’re heading to a hidden culinary gem in Mizukami Village, Kuma District, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Soba-dokoro Yama no Sachikan”.
Tucked away in Mizukami Village’s tranquil “Yuyama Onsen” hot spring district, this charming restaurant offers a peaceful, picturesque countryside atmosphere.
Step inside Yama no Sachikan and you’ll be greeted by a large traditional irori (sunken hearth).
The building is bright and airy with large windows, and you’ll instantly feel the warmth of natural wood throughout.

Seating is all traditional Japanese-style zashiki (tatami floor), so you can stretch out and relax fully β€” a wonderful chance to experience authentic Japanese dining culture.

Recommended Menu at Yama no Sachikan

Here’s a look at the menu at Yama no Sachikan.
I ordered the “Kamo Nanban Soba” (duck soba) for 1,100 yen.
The aroma was incredible!
The broth has a slightly sweet flavor with rich, fragrant dashi notes that fill the air.
These are pure 100% buckwheat noodles (juwari soba), stone-milled from buckwheat grown in the Oku-Kuma region. With ingredients like that, there’s simply no way it could be anything but delicious.
Mizukami Village is home to the headwaters of the Kuma River, and as the village’s name (“water above”) suggests, the water here is exceptionally pure and tasty.
That pristine water gives the soba its character, paired beautifully with tender, satisfying duck meat.
The duck meatballs (tsumire) are also outstanding β€” perfectly infused with the broth’s flavor.
After this photo, I was completely lost in eating (lol).

By the way, this is the “Ten Seiro Soba” (cold soba with tempura) I ordered on a different visit (sorry the photo is a bit crooked!).
The tempura was crispy and unbelievably light β€” when our group of 7 all ordered the same thing, the entire restaurant echoed with the most satisfying “crunch!” sounds you can imagine. ASMR fans would have been in heaven.

The shop also sells small souvenir items.
I’m sorry I don’t have a photo, but I highly recommend the karinto (crunchy fried snacks) made with soy milk β€” they make a perfect Kumamoto souvenir. For parking, please use the shared parking lot in front of the restaurant.
It’s located across from Motoyu hot spring (to the right in the photo).

While you’re here, be sure to also visit the neighboring Motoyu hot spring for a quintessential Japanese onsen experience! β™‘
