Hello there! This is Asukarando, your Sarukuma writer.

Today I’m introducing
Shimosuzurikawa, Kita-ku, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture,
home to “Hokubumachi Central Sports Park” (北部町中央運動公園)”.

Located right by the entrance to the Kumamoto Ring Road (West Bypass),
this quiet little park has a charmingly nostalgic feel.

The parking lot sits at the entrance to the park.
There are no painted lines — you can simply park wherever there’s space.

The restroom closest to the park has a distinctly old-school vibe — it features traditional Japanese-style (squat) toilets.

Down by the lower sports ground, however, you’ll find a newer restroom complete with a multipurpose toilet and a diaper-changing station.
It’s not far at all from the play area, so this might be the more comfortable option for families (^^;

There’s also a handwashing station within the park grounds.

For a park of this size, there’s a generous number of them scattered around — perfect for taking a break.

Highlights & Recommendations

The eye-catching centerpiece of the park is this fantastic play structure (^-^)/

It combines a jungle gym, a slide,
and a secret-base-style tunnel — and once kids slide down, they land in something that feels like a little sandbox.

My little one was endlessly fascinated, ducking in and out of this short tunnel over and over again (^^;

The jungle gym portion was a big hit too — kids absolutely love it (^-^)

A seesaw, too — what a throwback! It’s been ages since I’ve seen one.
And with four swings available, kids can hop on without waiting in line (^^)

And then there’s this mysterious round contraption.
My son and I turned it into a rock-paper-scissors game, advancing across it as we played (^-^)
