📌 What you’ll learn in this article
A SaruKuma writer visits “Kengun Kamiyamashita Park” in Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City and shares a firsthand report. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly highlights, access info, and opening hours.

Hello there!
This is Rikotama, writer for SaruKuma!

Today we’re heading to
Kengun, Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City, to explore
【Kengun Kamiyamashita Park】.

You’ll find it near the Kengun Koban-mae tram stop, right next to Matsuo Shrine!

You can also reach the park by climbing this stone staircase!

Matsuo Shrine!
Even though I live nearby, this was actually my very first visit! (・ω・)ノ

Right beside it stands the Matsuo Shrine Community Hall too!

On the western side of the shrine, there’s a small open athletic field.
The view from up there is absolutely lovely (*^▽^*)

You’ll spot two drinking fountains around the park, too!

Plus shaded benches tucked beneath the trees — perfect for a quiet break!

Why We Recommend It

Although the park is on the smaller side, it does have a few classic playground pieces!
There’s this charming swing set,

a monkey bars setup,

and a unique slide built right into the stone hillside!

But here’s the real magic of 【Kengun Kamiyamashita Park】!

Behind the playground, the land rises into a small wooded hill packed with towering old trees, and
the sheer presence of their gnarled roots is jaw-dropping!!!

Every single tree has roots that twist and snake along the ground like this,
fully exposed —
you can practically feel the life force radiating from them!!

I’m not sure if photos can fully capture it, but
the entire forest floor is blanketed in lush green moss,

giving the place a mystical, otherworldly vibe — like stepping into Princess Mononoke’s forest, or wandering through Totoro’s woods. The atmosphere is genuinely awe-inspiring!

It was only afterward that I noticed Matsuo Shrine standing right there (=゚ω゚)ノ

And I thought, “Aha — that explains everything!” ☆

This time of year, the ground is also scattered with countless tiny green acorns!

Even with limited play equipment, kids will have a blast hunting for acorns and twigs
and scrambling over those wild, wavy roots.
Without a doubt, it’s a magical little park for children! (≧▽≦)

There’s no parking lot, but if you live nearby — or if you’re staying in the area — definitely come and explore for yourself♪
