About the Park

Hello, travelers!
This is Rikotama, writing for SaruKuma!

Today I’m taking you to a charming local park tucked away in Kamisuizenji, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City —
Ryujabira Park!

The name is pronounced Ryujabira Park (りゅうじゃびら) — a unique local name that’s fun to say once you get the hang of it!

The first thing that catches your eye as you walk in is this magnificent ginkgo tree!

One side was still bright green during our visit, while the opposite side was glowing a brilliant autumn yellow — a beautiful little snapshot of seasonal change in Japan.

There’s one covered bench area — perfect for a quick break out of the sun (or a sudden shower).

And here’s the single drinking fountain — handy for thirsty kids (and grown-ups)!

The restroom — does that look like an elephant’s face to anyone else? 😊 Heads-up for international visitors: it’s a Japanese-style (squat) toilet, which is common in older parks across Japan.

Now this is a surprise — a proper outdoor stage! It’s the kind of space where local festivals, performances, or community events would feel right at home.

Stand up here with a microphone and you’d half expect a Japanese comedy duo to launch into a routine — “Hello, everyone! Lovely warm weather today, isn’t it?” 😄

And here’s a friendly request from the park to all visitors — please help keep this lovely community space clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy.

What Makes This Park Special

There’s a colorful, multi-feature playground structure that’s an instant magnet for little kids — guaranteed to have them sprinting across the park the moment they spot it!

There’s also a two-seat swing set — great for siblings or new little friends to share.

Three horizontal bars in small, medium, and large sizes mean kids of all heights can give them a try.

※ Bonus: there’s a vending machine right behind them — perfect for grabbing a cold drink on a hot Kumamoto day!

You’ll also find a sandbox and cute spring-rider toys nearby — classic Japanese neighborhood park favorites! ♡

Overall, the park is clean, well-maintained, and has wide-open sightlines, which makes it really easy to keep an eye on the kids while they explore.

If you visit in late autumn, you’ll catch the ginkgo in full gold — and there’s a fiery red Japanese maple (momiji 🍁) right next to it for that picture-perfect koyo (autumn leaves) moment.

Even better, the open lawn is ringed with cherry blossom trees 🌸, so this would be a wonderful local spot for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) in spring! I’m already looking forward to coming back next year for the blossoms!
