Kitahara Park: A Sparkling Playground with a Unique Stone Slide in Central Kumamoto
2021.02.21

A SaruKuma writer’s first-hand visit to Kitahara Park in Toroku, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. We cover family-friendly highlights, access, and opening hours.
About Kitahara Park
Hello, travelers! ☆
This is Rikotama, writer for SaruKuma!
Today I’m excited to introduce you to
Toroku, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City,
Kitahara Park!

You’ll find this charming park near Kumamoto Seimei Hospital, right along Ryujinbashi Street!

This park has an interesting history — it was relocated to its current spot in August 2018 as part of disaster recovery efforts following the devastating Northern Kyushu floods of July 2012.
That means everything here still feels brand-new and beautifully maintained! (≧▽≦)

There’s one drinking fountain available.

Here’s the restroom!
It’s Western-style, but please note there’s no diaper-changing station (>_<)

For seating, there’s one sit-up style bench.
※There are no vending machines on-site, so please bring your own drinks.
A FamilyMart convenience store is just a short walk away if you need to grab something.
Highlights of Kitahara Park

The undisputed star of this park is the gorgeous stone slide!
It’s wide enough that kids can slide down side-by-side with their friends! (*^â–½^*)

There are even posted slide rules (“Slide Safety Guidelines”) for the kids!

Right next to the slide, you’ll find these charming stone steps,
and a small tunnel that leads from the park out to the road!
Parents — please keep a close eye on little ones around this area for safety!

Other play equipment includes swings!

A horizontal bar!

And though it was still under construction at the time of our visit, there’s also a sandbox!

A small river runs alongside the park, and we even spotted a sign declaring this area “Hotaru no Machi” — the Town of Fireflies! (≧▽≦)
Wouldn’t it be magical to come back in early summer to catch a glimpse of fireflies dancing over the water? ♡
If you’re exploring central Kumamoto with kids in tow, be sure to add Kitahara Park and its iconic stone slide to your itinerary! ☆
