Introducing Kamibayashi Park
Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Ayu-mama, a writer for “Sarukuma.”
Today I’m excited to introduce you to Kamibayashi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, and the charming little park tucked away there:
[Kamibayashi Park].
The park sits just a short walk from the trendy Namikizaka shopping street, and right next to it you’ll spot the iconic moat of Kumamoto Castle.
Just across the street, you’ll find Joto Elementary School, giving the area a wholesome, neighborhood vibe.
This is one of those small, in-the-know city parks that locals love.
Think of it as a little oasis hidden in the heart of downtown Kumamoto!
Drinking fountain & hand-washing station (the step is thoughtfully designed with two heights, which is super handy for kids of different ages!)
There are benches, too!
(And just behind the benches sits a stylish restaurant with plenty of terrace seating — definitely on my list to try next time!)
A vending machine is conveniently located right next door, under the neighboring building.
Important note for visitors: there are no restrooms inside the park itself, so plan accordingly.
What Makes Kamibayashi Park Special
Even though it’s a small downtown park, it features a clean and surprisingly substantial combination playground structure!
You’ll find horizontal bars,
a sandbox,
and even classic spring-rider toys for the little ones!
There’s even a nostalgic tire-stepping play structure!
It’s the kind of old-school playground feature that brings a wave of nostalgia — a little glimpse into traditional Japanese childhood play.
My son hopping across the tires like a tiny ninja!
The flower beds are beautifully maintained too!
And yes — there are cherry blossom (sakura) trees!
On the day I visited, the petals were drifting down softly, carpeting the entire park in a delicate pink blanket. It was an absolutely magical scene — pure Japanese springtime beauty!
City parks can sometimes feel a bit neglected, but Kamibayashi Park is wonderfully clean and well cared for, making it a truly pleasant spot to relax!
It’s the perfect place to take a break during a day of shopping or sightseeing in central Kumamoto!
