About Fureai no Mori Park
Hello travelers! This is Mido 🌳, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today, I’m introducing Fureai no Mori Park, located in Harumizu, Kikuyo Town.
[Fureai no Mori Park] sits right next to the Fureai no Mori Training Center, where you’ll also find a vending machine just beside the building — handy for a quick drink on a hot day.
Here’s the park map↓
・Flower Viewing Rest Area
・Hanami (Cherry Blossom) Plaza
・Picnic Plaza (Camping Area)
・Children’s Plaza
・Cooking Pavilion
・Restrooms
・Parking Lot
Yes — this park even allows camping and barbecuing! ⛺ Just submit an application form to the Fureai no Mori Training Center in advance and obtain a use permit.
※ Note: BBQ use is limited to Kikuyo Town residents, those who work in Kikuyo Town, and Training Center users. Camping, however, is open to everyone, regardless of residency.
※ Designated zones for camping and BBQ are clearly marked.
Let me walk you through each area of the park 🌳
《Flower Viewing Rest Area》
You’ll find seven square benches lined up here, plus two long benches on each end!
The square benches don’t have a roof, but the long benches at either end sit beside large trees, giving you cool shade for a relaxing rest.
《Hanami Plaza》
A wide grassy lawn surrounded by countless cherry trees!
In spring, crowds gather here for hanami (cherry blossom viewing) 🌸 — it’s absolutely stunning!
See that slightly raised mound on the right side?
My kids call it the “sumo ring” lol.
We’ve had a few sumo matches there. (It’s a bit oversized for a real ring… haha)
《Picnic Plaza (Camping Area)》
Plenty of leafy trees provide natural shade, making this the perfect picnic spot 🌳
There are also several wooden tables and chairs available ♪
《Children’s Plaza》
The Children’s Plaza is more compact than the other two areas!
It’s surrounded by trees — ideal for bug hunting! Some trees were even oozing sap (a magnet for beetles!).
A sandy walking path circles the plaza.
The Children’s Plaza also has one covered table-and-chair set!
And there’s a frog-shaped water fountain — such a fun, unique design! 🐸
《Cooking Pavilion》
A solid covered cooking pavilion!
《Restrooms》
The men’s and women’s restrooms have Japanese-style (squat) toilets, but there’s also one multipurpose restroom available!
The park itself doesn’t have a diaper-changing station, but the adjacent “Fureai no Mori Training Center” (closed Sundays and holidays) has changing tables (in both men’s and women’s restrooms) and child-sized toilet seats 🚻
《Parking Lot》
The parking lot fits about 50 cars 🚙
Each plaza also has its own water fountain — a huge plus for families with kids!!
Please note: bicycles, cars, motorbikes, golf, and rollerskating are not permitted inside the park.
Why You’ll Love Fureai no Mori Park
★ Wide-Open Space to Play Freely ♪
There are no playground installations, but the beautifully maintained grassy park offers endless ways to play!
Bring balls, bubbles, butterfly nets — anything your kids love — and head straight to Fureai no Mori Park!
★ Stunning Views & Pure Nature!
You can see the beautiful Mt. Aso mountains in the distance 👀 Gorgeous! This shot is from the edge of the Flower Viewing Rest Area. You’ll also hear the songs of all kinds of birds.
And here’s the view from beside the parking lot 👀💛

★ A Bug Lover’s Paradise!
With diverse trees and wide lawns, you can encounter a huge variety of insects!
Beyond cicadas, grasshoppers, mantises, dragonflies, and butterflies, you’ll also find stag beetles and rhinoceros beetles!!
My son and daughter recently caught both — and they spotted a stag beetle in the middle of the day!
Visit at night, and you’ll see groups of families with flashlights, hunting for beetles. A real Japanese summer adventure!

★ Spring Means Cherry Blossom Viewing 🌸!
During hanami season, the park comes alive with visitors!
The cherry blossoms are absolutely magical ✨

Come experience nature firsthand at Fureai no Mori Park!
When the weather cools down, you can really run around to your heart’s content!
In autumn, acorn hunting is a fun seasonal activity ✨
