About Jirobe Tourist Farm
Hello! This is Suno, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m introducing a wonderful spot in Hashirikata, Uto City:
Jirobe Tourist Farm.
Best of all, it’s an easy 30-minute drive from central Kumamoto City — perfect for a half-day outing!
The farm sits right at the foot of Jirobe Bridge in Hashirikata (yes, that’s where the name comes from!), and the lovely Awashima Shrine is nearby too.
Jirobe Tourist Farm has a spacious parking lot, so even arriving by car along the main road is stress-free.
There’s even a second parking lot, so no need to worry about space.
Head here first to check in at reception.
Weekday afternoons are nice and relaxed, while weekends and holidays prioritize reservations — so booking ahead is highly recommended.
The farm has three greenhouses (A, B, and C), each home to different varieties of strawberries.
Here are the strawberry-picking prices (60-minute all-you-can-eat).
Note that pricing differs between December–April 8 and April 9–mid-May! (Take-home strawberries are sold separately by weight.)
Grab one of these trays.
You can also add condensed milk for just ¥100 — a sweet little bonus!
Start with Greenhouse B, located right in front of the reception area.
Be sure to read the picking instructions carefully before you begin!
Never pull the strawberries off the plant!
The motto here is: “Cradle gently, then snap.”
Once you step inside the well-kept greenhouse, you’ll notice it’s beautifully warm — feel free to leave your coat in the car!
The strawberries grow at a comfortable height, so you don’t even have to crouch.
Greenhouse B specializes in the “OiC Berry” variety.
It’s so helpful that each variety comes with detailed notes on its flavor profile!
Next up: Greenhouse A, just in front of the first parking lot.
Be sure to close the door tightly behind you — otherwise the bees might escape!
Honeybees do buzz around inside, so families with small children should take care not to disturb the bees or hives.
Here’s “Haruhi.”
This is a brand-new variety officially registered in 2021!
Just look at them!
Each strawberry is gorgeous, and the sweet aroma alone is enough to make your mouth water.
“Akihime” — a unique, elongated-shaped strawberry.
Greenhouse B lets you sample four different varieties!
“Hoshi-Urara” — and these were absolutely huge!
The aisles are easy to walk through, with cheerful radio music playing in the background.
The plants are at a kid-friendly height too — just remember to only pick what you can actually eat!
“Beni-Hoppe” — its name literally means “red cheeks,” referring to how delicious it is.
It’s fascinating to learn the meaning behind such well-known variety names!
Between Greenhouses B and C you’ll find vending machines and a smoking area for breaks (smoking is strictly prohibited inside the greenhouses).
There are also separate Western-style restrooms for men and women.
Hand-washing facilities are right next to the restrooms.
Now for the final stretch — Greenhouse C!
Tip: Lift the strawberry upward and twist your wrist so the stem snaps cleanly downward.
Once you get the hang of it, you’ll be picking like a pro in no time!
“Hoshi no Kirameki” (Sparkling Star).
Greenhouse C also offers four different varieties to compare.
“Yotsuboshi” (Four Stars) — named because it earns top marks in sweetness, tartness, aroma, and flavor.
What a delightful name!
Greenhouse C even has a rest area, so you can sit down and savor your strawberries at your own pace.
“Mou-Ikko” — meaning “one more!” When you spot this variety just as you’re slowing down, you can’t help but go for one more bite. (lol)
The last one is “Polic-chigo” (a play on “polish” + strawberry).
This was my first time hearing of it! I really recommend reading the description before you pick one.
The notes are short, easy to read, and they help you appreciate each variety bite by bite!
Use the farm map to hop between your favorite greenhouses!
Highlights of Jirobe Tourist Farm
There’s also an on-site farm shop!
They sell freshly picked strawberries and frozen ones too (open 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM).
They even offer small strawberries perfect for jam-making.
This whole bunch costs just ¥800 (tax included) — an absolute steal!
And take a look at this — a tasty sweets menu, too! (The summertime shaved ice and ice cream are also incredible.)
Our family’s top pick is the #1 best-selling Strawberry Smoothie at Â¥600.
It’s made fresh to order.
There’s a rest area right out front where you can wait comfortably.
The space is family-friendly enough for crawling babies and toddling little ones to play safely.
Ta-da!
Jirobe Tourist Farm’s strawberry smoothie — a favorite for our whole family!
It’s incredibly rich with bright, natural sweetness.
At the bottom of the cup you’ll find chunks of fully-ripe frozen strawberries — and trust me, everyone fights over them. (lol)
It’s a year-round signature item, and many fans visit just for this smoothie alone!
Reservations are accepted by phone or online. (Groups of 10 or more must book in advance, so please confirm ahead of time.)
