About the Restaurant

Today I’m taking you to a true local gem in
Naganominami, Higashi-ku, Kumamoto City—
“Gargrey”!

This restaurant has been around for ages,
and the fact that it has stayed in business unchanged for so long is proof that the food is seriously good (^-^)/

The sign at the entrance reads “Men’s Diner”…
“Um… I’m a girl, is that going to be a problem???”

No worries at all! Women are more than welcome to walk right in (^-^)/

The interior has such a stylish, cozy vibe~ (⌒0⌒)／~~
And look—a vintage rotary phone is still proudly displayed!

There are two large communal tables, and you can sit wherever you like.
There were no kids’ chairs, but the height of the chairs and tables worked out fine even for my 4-year-old son.

Drinks are self-service—

Set meals starting from 600 yen?! That’s incredible value!

The parking lot is just across the street, with plenty of spaces, so no stress there.
There’s a traffic light and crosswalk too, which makes it safe and easy when bringing kids along.

Recommended Menu

This time we ordered the Beef Steak Set (Japanese-style) — 1,000 yen

Tonkatsu Set — 700 yen

Both were absolutely delicious.

The Japanese-style Beef Steak comes with a garlicky soy-based sauce and
incredibly tender beef—simply the best (⌒0⌒)／~~

The vegetables underneath soak up the sauce as they sizzle on the iron plate, basically becoming a stir-fry of their own!
And it pairs perfectly with steamed white rice (^-^)/

Beef Steak Set (Western-style) — 1,000 yen
Curious about the Western-style version, we shared one as well (^-^)

Equally tender beef, this time draped in a rich demi-glace sauce. Truly out-of-this-world delicious (^o^)

I ordered the Tonkatsu Set for my son,
and he polished off every last bite—he loved it (^-^)

There’s no kids’ tableware available, but when we asked, the staff kindly brought out a small spoon and fork.

The mains are wonderful, but the rice is just as outstanding!

Just as I suspected!
It’s Shichijo Rice—premium Kumamoto-grown rice (^o^)

Honestly, it was so good that I was already craving it again on the way home,
and thinking, “Maybe tomorrow, too…” Gargrey is the kind of place that fills both your stomach and your heart with happiness.
