About the Shop

Hello there!
This is Asukarando, writing for SaruKuma.

Today I’m introducing a wonderful little sweets shop located in
Hyakkenmachi, Minamata City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Onizuka Nisshodo”.

You’ll spot this charming, old-school confectionery shop just down the road from Minamata Station! (^-^)/

There’s a spacious parking lot right next to the shop โ€” super convenient for travelers driving in.

At the entrance, beautifully arranged flowers and a cute rabbit ornament greet every visitor! \(^o^)/

Step inside and you’ll find an amazing selection โ€” everything from traditional Japanese wagashi to Western-style cakes and pastries!

Kuriman (chestnut bun) โ€” 160 yen

Dorayaki (sweet bean pancake) โ€” 185 yen

Beautifully boxed sweets are also available โ€” perfect souvenirs to bring home or gift to friends! (^-^)

They also accept orders for decorated cakes!

Fresh cream decoration cake (No. 5 / about 15 cm) โ€” 3,000 yen
Fresh cream decoration cake (No. 6 / about 18 cm) โ€” 3,600 yen

Fresh chocolate decoration cake (No. 5) โ€” 3,000 yen
Fresh chocolate decoration cake (No. 6) โ€” 3,600 yen

Recommended Treats

This time, I tried the shop’s signature Karinto Manju โ€” 140 yen
(a deep-fried sweet bun with red bean paste inside).

It fits in the palm of your hand, but it’s surprisingly heavy thanks to the generous filling of sweet red bean paste! (^q^)

Inside is smooth, strained koshi-an (red bean paste)!

The outside of the karinto manju is satisfyingly crispy, while the koshi-an inside is moist and elegantly sweet โ€” never too sugary. (^q^)

It’s the kind of comforting sweet that makes you exhale and smile. (^-^)

The package even includes a tip on how to enjoy it best (^-^)

“Karinto manju gradually loses its crispiness over time. If the crisp texture fades, simply reheat in an oven toaster for about 1 minute 30 seconds to 2 minutes โ€” the crispiness comes right back, and it’s delicious again.”

When I bit into mine, the crispy crunch was still going strong!

Onizuka Nisshodo’s other big specialty? Their cream daifuku (filled mochi)!

Fresh chocolate daifuku โ€” 140 yen
Fresh matcha daifuku โ€” 140 yen
Fresh cream daifuku โ€” 140 yen
Japanese black tea daifuku โ€” 140 yen

I missed out on these this time, so I’m absolutely making sure to grab some on my next visit! (^-^)

They also had loads of cakes featuring seasonal Japanese strawberries! (^-^)

Parfait Deluxe โ€” 390 yen
Deluxe Strawberry โ€” 520 yen

They sell regular-sized strawberry shortcake too, but if you’re a true strawberry shortcake fan, the
“Deluxe Strawberry” is impossible to resist! (^ะท^)-โ˜†

Out of all those tempting seasonal strawberry options, I went for the
Parfait Deluxe โ€” 390 yen!

Loaded with strawberries, mandarin oranges, pineapple, and a generous swirl of fresh whipped cream (^q^)
That purple layer at the bottom is a refreshing blueberry mousse โ€” light, sweet, and just perfect (^-^)/

Christmas cake reservations had also started! โ˜†

Whenever I see those “limited quantity” signs, I always feel that urge to hurry and order โ€” anyone else? (^^;

If you’re traveling around Minamata, make sure to drop by “Onizuka Nisshodo” โ€” a true treasure trove of both Japanese wagashi and Western pastries! \(^o^)/
