Welcome to Oyatsuya Kanon

Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Igaguri, a writer for Sarukuma 🌰

Today I’m taking you to a hidden gem tucked away in Oyano-machi, Kamiamakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
Oyatsuya Kanon — a stylish little sweets shop you’ll want to add to your Amakusa itinerary.

You can already feel the impeccable taste from the exterior alone (⋈◍>◡<◍)。✧♡

There are about 3 parking spaces in front of the shop.

Climb the stairs — the entrance is on the second floor.

Just inside on the left, you’ll find a charming handmade accessories corner.

Carefully chosen ingredients are showcased here, alongside a feature article from the Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun newspaper.

Turns out the owner hails from Yushima Island — what a lovely backstory \(◎o◎)/!

Next, the baked-goods corner.

Notice the chalkboards and dried flowers peeking into the photos here and there?

The whole place is just stylish!

They even sell coffee beans!

Must-Try Menu Items at Oyatsuya Kanon

My Gateau Chocolat ¥1,900
Gateau Green Tea — Amakusa Edition ¥2,200
My Gateau Mikan (Mandarin Orange) ¥2,200

Macarons and freshly squeezed juices are available too!

The reservation-only “My Cheesecake” is another star.

Wow… that looks unbelievably good.

Even from the photo alone, you can sense how rich and silky-smooth it is!
(Made without flour or fresh cream, by the way.)

You’ll also find sweet potato pies, croissants, and the seasonal “Sakura An Butter” (cherry blossom red bean paste with butter)!

Oh my… so tempting 🤤

The chocolate-dipped croissants are irresistible 🤤
(And yes — that’s a portrait of WANIMA on the chalkboard behind!)

After much delicious deliberation…

I went with the “Black Cat Kanon” “Nya-tou Chocolat” — a 2-piece set for ¥780!
The packaging and paper bag are too cute for words ♡

This is My Gateau Chocolat reimagined in cat shape — released to celebrate February 22nd (“Nyan Nyan Nyan”), Japan’s official Cat Day! The name “Nya-tou Chocolat” cleverly merges the Japanese cat sound “nya” with “gâteau.”

Inside, the texture is luxuriously gooey — somewhere between fresh chocolate ganache and a melt-in-your-mouth fondant au chocolat. Absolute heaven.

I genuinely don’t think there’s a more delicious gateau chocolat out there.
Even the picks are cat-shaped — utterly unbeatable.

When I mentioned I wanted to feature the shop on Sarukuma, the owner instantly lit up — “Sarukuma? Oh, I know it!” (*’▽’*)
That alone made my day, but she even kindly arranged things for the photoshoot. Such a warm, welcoming host (:_;)

And right over here is something truly special:

The WANIMA Corner!!! WANIMA is a famous Japanese rock band whose members are from Amakusa City — and the owner is a huge fan ☆

(There’s also a children’s chair, so families are welcome!)

Please note: eat-in service is currently suspended, so it’s takeaway only.

My Gateau Chocolat in cat form — try a sprinkle of salt for an even richer flavor ♡

Be sure to give it a try when you visit Amakusa (^_-)-☆
