2020.10.29

A SaruKuma writer visits and reports on “Smilia,” the rooftop kids’ space at Tsuruya Department Store in Tetorihoncho, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. We cover family-friendly highlights, access, and opening hours.
Hello, fellow travelers!
I’m Ayu-mama, a writer for “SaruKuma”!
Today I’m introducing a wonderful spot located in Tetorihoncho, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
【Smilia – Tsuruya Department Store Rooftop】
Smilia is a kids’ play area on the rooftop of Tsuruya — Kumamoto’s iconic, long-established department store that almost every Kumamoto local has visited at least once.
Hop on the elevator and ride straight up to the main building’s rooftop!
The doors open and there it is — Smilia!
True to its rooftop setting, the space feels wonderfully open and airy!
Here are the rules for using Smilia.
Of course there are restrooms,
plus diaper-changing tables and a nursing room.
There’s even a dedicated crawling area for babies,
and chairs and tables for taking a break.
Children’s chairs are available too!
There are vending machines as well.
This short one is low enough for little ones to use themselves.
There’s even a vending machine offering juice in cute paper cartons.
Truly everything you could ask for!
That’s Tsuruya for you!
The level of service is simply outstanding.
Highlights We Recommend
Our top pick? The huge variety of play equipment!
It’s hard to believe a rooftop could pack in this many fun things to play with.
There’s the “Sky Saurus” slide,
the “Bridge of Stars” (even the name is adorable!),
and the “Hello Hello Box.”
Kids can chat with each other through the matching box across the way.
And there’s so much more —

these adorable play installations,
peek-through windows,
the “Forest Wheel” (turn the handle to make balls move),
curious funhouse mirrors,
and even a fountain!
My son had an absolute blast running around and exploring everything!

Want Dad to entertain the kids while Mom finishes browsing?
