About the Shop
I’m Ayu-mama, a writer for “Sarukuma.”
Today I’d like to introduce you to a wonderful spot in Kusakabe, Takamori-machi, Aso District:【Oku-Aso Bussankan】
This shop is located along the scenic route connecting Kumamoto Prefecture and Miyazaki Prefecture. The surrounding area is mostly mountains with hardly any other shops nearby,
so it’s an incredibly handy place for grabbing a bite, taking a restroom break, or doing a little shopping. I stop by often myself.
Inside, the shelves are lined with souvenirs and local specialty products.
They even sell children’s toys.(Other customers were there, so I couldn’t take a photo…)
Outside, you’ll find fresh vegetables on display!
And if you head around to the back of the shop…
…surprise! There’s an open square with a playground!
Of course, my son loved playing here too!Recommended Menu
My top recommendation? The freshly made manju (Japanese sweet buns) sold inside the shop!
They come in several flavors, all priced at just 150 yen each!
If you’d like to enjoy one right away, just ask the staff and they’ll warm it up in the microwave for you!
Here’s the one I picked: the ‘Yomogi (mugwort) Manju’
Filled with smooth red bean paste (koshian) that pairs beautifully with the earthy yomogi flavor!
The dough is wonderfully soft and fluffy!
And here’s my son’s pick: the ‘Imo (sweet potato) Manju’
A double-punch of gentle sweet potato paste and smooth red bean paste!
Very satisfying and filling — what a fantastic combination!
If you’re driving through the Oku-Aso area, please stop by! Delicious manju are waiting for you!
