2024.06.08

A firsthand report from a Sarukuma writer who visited “Pandapizza – Ozu Shimomachi –” in Kumamoto. Prices start from 700 yen. We’ve also covered family-friendly tips, access, and opening hours.
Welcome to Pandapizza
Hi everyone, this is Mido, a writer for Sarukuma!
Today I’m introducing a charming little spot located in Shimomachi, Ozu Town:
Pandapizza.
This is a takeout shop offering pizzas and breads packed with thoughtful, carefully chosen ingredients♪
I’ll share more about Pandapizza’s commitment to quality a bit later!
Though “panda” is in the name, look for the cat illustration on the signboard — that’s the landmark!
The shop is right next to the Ozu Shimomachi intersection, near Wagyu Yakiniku LIEBE Ozu Main Branch.
There’s also a banner flag out front to help you spot it.
Parking is available for about 5 cars.
There’s parking around the shop and across the street as well. The east-side parking lot is the largest!
Here’s the east-side parking area:

A welcoming standing sign greets you at the entrance!
Now let’s step inside Pandapizza!
A beautiful display of pizzas and breads awaits!
A handmade pizza for just 700 yen, tax included!
Three different pizzas are available daily! Pictured here is the “Mixed Pizza” ♪
Here’s a photo from another visit!
On the left is the “Olive, Bacon & Tomato Pizza (Anchovy Sauce),” and on the right is the “Cheese-Loaded Mushroom Pizza (Basil Sauce).”
Reservations are also welcome, and reserving lets you choose from 9 pizza varieties!
① Mixed
② Cheese-Loaded Mushroom Pizza
③ Egg & Sausage
④ Keema Curry
⑤ German Potato & Egg
⑥ Meat Sauce
⑦ Bacon & Sausage
⑧ Vegetable & Sausage
⑨ Mushroom & Bacon
They all sound absolutely delicious♪
And it’s not just pizza! The breads on display look just as tempting!
Meet the “Cat Eating Sweet Red Bean Paste” and “Cat Eating Strawberry Jam” buns — so adorable!
Both the anko (red bean paste) and jam are made in-house!
The “Acorn Brothers” and the “Afro-kun & Bob-cut-san Melon Pan Set”
The sizing is adorable♪
“Crunchy Chocolate Melon Pan,” “Sweet Potato Anko Melon Pan,” and classic “Melon Pan”
A melon pan filled with sweet potato anko is a rare treat!
The “High-Hydration Bread (with Green Onion)” boasts a 100% hydration rate, giving it a moist, brand-new texture inside.
“Meat Sauce Heart Focaccia” and “Focaccia”
You can clearly see how soft and chewy the dough is!
The “Pizza Stick” and “Grilled Sandwich” look perfectly portable and easy to enjoy ♪
The “Salt Butter Melon Pan” has a long, slender shape!
The “Keema Curry (Medium Spicy)” bun is baked rather than fried, making it a healthier option ♪
Two types of rusks are available: “Sugar Rusk” and “Bagel Pepper Rusk”!
The pepper version makes a perfect snack to pair with drinks ♪
Bagels come in two flavors: “Salt Butter Bagel” and “Plain Bagel”!
The “Panda Loaf” is studded with both black and white sesame seeds — yum!
A pack of three “French Bread” sticks is just 250 yen!
Drinks are sold alongside the breads as well!
On the day of my visit, the case also had chiffon cake and apple pie ♪
Every single bread looks irresistibly delicious!
Now, here’s what makes Pandapizza truly special — their commitment to quality:

・Kyushu-grown wheat flour
・Eggs from Sagara Farm in Kikuyo
・Bacon and sausages free from added nitrites
・Sanonto sugar (with some granulated sugar)
・No shortening or margarine
・Vegetables sourced from Kumamoto whenever possible
・Hokkaido-grown corn
・Kumamoto pork and Kagoshima chicken
・Homemade anko (using Hokkaido azuki beans)
・Handmade creams (custard, chocolate custard, whipped cream) and jams
・Pizza dough and various pizza sauces all handmade in-house
With this level of dedication to ingredients, I can’t recommend this place enough — please come and try it!
Pandapizza also sells beautiful handmade crafts.
Baskets, wreaths, bags — they’re all wonderfully charming♪♪
Pandapizza’s Recommended Menu
First and foremost, the pizza is an absolute must-try!!
Here’s the “Mixed Pizza” (700 yen)
The colors are absolutely beautiful♪
The diameter is 20 cm! For scale, that’s my 5-year-old daughter’s hand next to it.
They kindly explain how to reheat the pizza for the best taste, so I warmed mine in a frying pan before digging in!
Not only is the pizza dough fantastic, but the homemade sauce and toppings were incredibly delicious too ♪
The next pizza is a smaller version than the regular size.
“Spring Vegetable Pizza” (400 yen)
I bought this on a different day from the photos above, so it didn’t appear in my earlier introduction!
It was generously topped with bamboo shoots, plus aosa seaweed tsukudani and takana (pickled mustard greens).
The bamboo shoots had the perfect texture, and the flavor was absolutely my style! Apparently this one is a rare special that occasionally appears on the shelf.
I picked up several breads as well!
“Bagel Pepper Rusk” (150 yen), “Crunchy Chocolate Melon Pan” (200 yen), “High-Hydration Bread (with Green Onion)” (200 yen)
The “Crunchy Chocolate Melon Pan” features a cocoa cookie crust packed with — true to its name — crunchy chocolate pieces inside!
One bite and look at that face♪
And after the second bite, an even bigger smile♪♪
With chocolate tucked inside, this bread offers a seriously satisfying bite!
The “Bagel Pepper Rusk” was perfect as a snack — the thinly sliced rusks were wonderfully crisp ♪
The “High-Hydration Bread (with Green Onion)” made a fantastic breakfast. It was incredibly chewy, and the green onion flavor matched perfectly — I want to eat it again!
Both were absolutely delicious!
I didn’t get a photo, but my daughter also enjoyed the “Acorn Brothers”!
She fell completely in love with the cute faces of the Acorn Brothers ♪
The shop opens at 11:00 a.m., so if there’s a particular bread you’re after, it’s best to go early.
Pizzas can be reserved — perfect for lunch or dinner, isn’t it?
Reservations are usually accepted up until the day before, but same-day orders may be possible if ingredients are available.
