About the Shop

Hello there!
This is Ayu-mama, a writer for “Sarukuma.”

You’ve probably spotted this iconic vehicle at least once before, haven’t you?

If you’ve ever driven the Daini Kuko Line from central Kumamoto City toward Kumamoto Airport, you may have noticed a charmingly weathered, old-school vehicle parked all by itself in a wide-open lot…

Yes! That’s the one!

At long last, we’re introducing that famous long-established hot dog shop!

Today we’re featuring Hot Dog Yotsuba, located in Hirata, Mashiki Town, Kamimashiki District.

Right at the Hirata intersection in Mashiki Town, in a wide-open lot, you’ll find this seriously vintage and quirky-looking vehicle parked there.

And believe it or not, this is the shop!
It’s not a mobile food truck that moves around — they sell right here from this very vehicle.

As you can probably guess from how weathered the car looks,
this is a beloved hot dog shop that has been serving Kumamoto for over 40 years —
a true local legend!

Recently, due to the owner’s health concerns,
business hours have become irregular, and there’s no telling exactly when they’ll be open.

So if you happen to catch them open, consider yourself seriously lucky!

I had struck out countless times before, but this time I finally got my chance!

The owner kindly told me, “You can take all the photos you want of the outside, but no photos inside the vehicle, please,”
so of course I’m honoring that promise!

That’s why I don’t have a photo of the menu, but here are the prices:
Mix: 350 yen.
All others (sausage, ham, egg, wiener, cheese, tuna): 300 yen.

Incredibly, unbelievably affordable!

Once you order, they’ll bake it fresh right there in the oven inside the vehicle.

While waiting, I chatted with the owner’s wife and other customers as we all watched the hot dogs bake.
That homey, friendly atmosphere is one of the best parts of the experience.
It’s clear it all comes down to the wonderful personalities of the owner and his wife.

And just like that — they’re ready!

“They’re packed exactly like the labels say!”
the owner told me with a smile.

So thoughtful! Wiener on the right, egg on the left.

And the retro Ryoyu Pan paper bag with the owner’s handwritten labels just adds the perfect nostalgic touch!

Recommended Menu

The Mix is the most popular pick, but this time I went with wiener and egg. (I know, I skipped the bestseller — sorry!)
My son insisted on wiener and egg, so I had to oblige (^^;;

Even the inner plastic bag has a charming retro design!
“Wishing you happiness”
The four-leaf clover (“yotsuba”) motif represents bringing happiness and delicious hot dogs to everyone — a sweet little touch!

Honestly, this message warmed my heart more than I expected (cue the happy tears!)

Here’s the Wiener — 300 yen

And here’s the Egg — 300 yen

Inside, you’ll find cabbage and cucumber as well.
The bun is crispy on the outside, the mustard gives a nice little kick, and there’s plenty of ketchup!

I got my dose of happiness too — delivered exactly as promised!

It’s a nostalgic, old-fashioned hot dog made with the love and care
of a kind-hearted owner and his wife.

One bite is all it takes to understand why locals in Kumamoto have loved this place for over 40 years.

If you ever spot it open, definitely stop by and treat yourself!
