Introducing Kamaage Udon Mugi no Hana
Hello travelers! This is Maru, your Sarukuma writer.
Today I’m taking you to
Nankan Town in Tamana District, Kumamoto Prefecture,
to a wonderful spot called “Kamaage Udon Mugi no Hana”.

The restaurant sits along Prefectural Route 4, the TamanaโYame Line โ easy to find on a road trip through Kumamoto.

There’s plenty of parking both in front of and behind the shop โ a relief if you’re driving!
While this place is famous for udon,
their shoronpo (Chinese-style soup dumplings) are equally legendary, and you can grab them to-go right from a window outside the shop! ๐
They even serve soft-serve ice cream โ a fun bonus on a sunny day.
Here’s a look at their hours.
Just inside the entrance, you’ll find packaged udon, broth,

and other gourmet products for sale!
A perfect souvenir if you’d like to recreate the meal back home ๐๏ธ๐
The interior is impressively spacious.
Long tables that seat about ten people line the room โ guests share tables but with comfortable space between them.

By the windows there’s a traditional tatami zashiki area, popular with families with young children.

Children’s chairs are also available.

Now, let’s check out the menu!
Here come the famous thick, chewy aged udon noodles.
A plain kake udon for just 240 yen โ incredible value! ๐ฎ

They also offer stone-milled soba made from buckwheat ground in-house with a traditional stone mill.

There’s even a section called “Betsubara” โ a charming Japanese phrase meaning “second stomach,” reserved for desserts and snacks (=^^=)
This is where you’ll find the soup dumplings, sake-steamed buns, and more.
You’ll also see onigiri (rice balls) and Chinese-style chimaki (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves) on offer.

Don’t miss the winter-only specials!
Just looking at them will warm you right up โบ๏ธ๐
Recommended Dishes

First up โ
Nankan Age Udon, 440 yen
Nankan-age, the area’s famous fried tofu, soaks up the savory dashi broth into every juicy bite. Mellow, comforting, and absolutely delicious ๐๏ธ๐

The aged udon noodles are thick and unbelievably chewy!!
Soft and pillowy โ like a baby’s cheek! ๐ถ

Next is Gobo-ten Udon (burdock tempura) for 400 yen, with a meat topping (toppings priced separately).
You can mix and match toppings however you like โ totally customizable! ๐

And then โ the famous shoronpo soup dumplings, just 80 yen each!
Such a steal!!!

Honestly, they’re closer to nikuman (Japanese steamed pork buns) than typical Chinese soup dumplings.
Either way, they’re packed with rich, savory meat juiciness! (^O^)
And here’s a real gem: Sobagaki Agedashi (deep-fried buckwheat dumpling), 350 yen

Fluffy fried buckwheat dumplings, generously topped with grated daikon radish and bonito flakes!
The sweet-savory dashi soaks in beautifully โ pure umami bliss ๐
I fell in love with this dish… I’m already planning my return! โจ
Next time, I’d love to try the sobagaki isobeyaki (with seaweed) too!
If you’re traveling through Kumamoto, don’t miss the chance to try these chewy aged udon noodles, juicy soup dumplings, and unique sobagaki dishes! โค
