Introducing Tsuboi Hibika

Hello, fellow travelers!

This is Binako, your SaruKuma writer, currently appreciating the wonders of seedless grapes!

Today, I’m excited to share a hidden gem located in Tsuboi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
“Tsuboi Hibika”.

This charming cake shop is tucked away in the Tsuboi neighborhood. When I arrived, there were already about five groups of customers lined up outside!

That’s how popular this place is — and items sell out fast, so
I highly recommend arriving early!

There’s a parking lot right in front of the shop, making it easy to visit by car — perfect if you’re road-tripping around Kumamoto.

When my turn came and I stepped inside, beautiful cakes were lined up in the display case.
Honestly, I felt a rush of urgency seeing how few were left! (laughs)

Apple Tart — 380 yen

Nuts and Fresh Chocolate Tart — 400 yen

Rum Cheese Tart — 400 yen

From kid-friendly favorites to more sophisticated, grown-up flavors — there’s something for everyone here.

Right next to the register, there’s a wonderful selection of baked goods.

The variety of pound cakes makes them ideal souvenirs or gifts to bring home.

One of their most popular baked items is the
Butter Sablé.
These sophisticated cookies are made with salted butter, giving them a refined, slightly savory edge.

You can pick your baked treats and place them on these adorable wooden plates.
As you can see — yes, I went straight for the sablés! (laughs)

They also offer Muffins (350 yen) and other tempting options.

What I Recommend

This time, I picked up:
Rum Cheese Tart — 400 yen
Cheese and Black Pepper Sablé — 300 yen

Let’s start with the sablé!

Cheese and black pepper —
now THAT’S an exciting flavor combination!

The sablé is wonderfully crispy and crumbly, with the spiciness of black pepper and the rich, deep flavor of cheese coming together in absolute harmony. It works equally well as an afternoon snack or as a sophisticated nibble with a glass of wine.

Next up: the
Rum Cheese Tart.

The fork glides through the tart with that satisfying, melt-in-your-mouth softness.
Absolutely irresistible!

The creamy, melt-in-your-mouth cheese pairs beautifully with the warm depth of rum, creating a flavor combination that’s simply heavenly. It’s refreshingly light — never heavy — so you could happily eat several in a row.

The crumbly tart base paired with the silky cheese filling creates pure dessert bliss.

Items sell out continuously from opening to closing, so if you want to try these treasures, get there early!
