About the Shop

Hello, fellow travelers!
It’s Maru, your friendly Sarukuma writer 🙂🙃

Today, I’m taking you to a hidden gem in Nishi-Kogai-machi, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City:
“Futaba Sushi”.

The charming, old-school storefront simply stopped me in my tracks — I couldn’t walk past!

This is a beloved local takeout sushi specialty shop with just over 50 years of history 🍣✨

You’ll find it along the Kogai-machi Shopping Street (Kogai-machi Shotengai).
There’s no on-site parking, but affiliated parking lots are available nearby through the shopping street 🚙=꒱‧*

The sign advertising “Osaka’s famous Anago-maki (conger eel roll)” really caught my eye ✨
Anago-maki — I’d never even heard of it before! 😮

Real samples are displayed at the storefront, which makes choosing super easy — a huge help for first-time visitors!

Alongside the famous Anago-maki, there’s the charmingly named “Abekku-maki” (“sweethearts roll”) and more
(“Abekku” is a wonderfully retro Japanese word for “couple” — you don’t hear it much these days! (=^^=))

Here you’ll find maki-zushi (rolled sushi), Sukeroku (a classic combo of inari and maki), assorted sushi platters, and more.

Tekka-maki (tuna roll), lettuce roll, and more.

Have you noticed yet?
The prices are incredibly affordable! 😮

Handmade sushi at this price? You’ll want to ask, “Are you sure?” 🍣

They also offer Matsumae-zushi (saba-zushi / pressed mackerel sushi)!
The casual mention of their 50-year anniversary is genuinely impressive 😊

The shop is run by the kindly owner — who looks nothing like he’s in his 80s, with glowing skin to match — and his lovely wife, just the two of them ❤

Chatting with this delightful couple is honestly half the fun 😊

Recommended Menu

The owners kindly showed me a few of their freshly made sushi creations!

Behold the famous Anago-maki — only 400 yen

The nori (seaweed) is rolled on the inside, with toasted black sesame coating the outside.
Filled with conger eel, cucumber, and Japanese omelet (tamago).

Mild and easy enough for kids to enjoy! 👦👧

A beautifully colorful assorted sushi platter, plus tekka-maki and more.

I went for the 50th anniversary special:

Matsumae-zushi (saba-zushi / pressed mackerel sushi) for just 500 yen!!!
And the portion is generous! 😍

You don’t often get the chance to try this kind of sushi.

Saba-zushi can only be made with the freshest mackerel ❤

Thick, meaty mackerel paired with the deep umami of kombu (kelp) — a truly soul-satisfying flavor 🐟

And that vinegared rice is just outstanding!
Firmly pressed and beautifully crafted — every bite reveals the owner’s careful, decades-honed skill!!

Whether you’re a Kumamoto local or a tourist passing through, please drop by to meet this wonderful couple and grab some delicious sushi to go ✨
