Introducing Si-Sa- Okinawan Restaurant

Hello, travelers!
I’m Ayu-mama, a writer for “Sarukuma.”

The restaurant I’m featuring today is one we’ve already covered once before on Sarukuma!

Just to be clear from the start — featuring it a second time doesn’t mean we have any cozy arrangement
with the restaurant, and no envelopes have been slipped under the table.

The simple truth is that I deeply love Okinawa and Okinawan cuisine — that’s all there is to it.

Today’s pick is Si-Sa-, located in Higashi-Honmachi, Higashi Ward, Kumamoto City.

On the day I visited, they were serving lunch. (Hours and menus have since changed — please check before going!)
For dinner-focused restaurants, times have been incredibly tough.
It can’t be helped, but Japan’s restaurants have been having a really hard time of it.

Si-Sa- has been putting energy into takeout and lunch service too.

If they’re working this hard, I want to support them!
That’s exactly the spirit I had when I walked through the door!

I had my little one with me again this time, and of course they welcomed us warmly!

Recommended Menu Items at Si-Sa- Okinawan Restaurant

Here’s the menu!
As varied and tempting as ever!

I always struggle to decide what to order.

The chef’s recommendations look amazing too.
I want this AND that — everything!

They even offer Okinawa’s famous Agu pork and mā-su nabe (Okinawan sea-salt hotpot).

Alright, time to settle down and start with a Beer (550 yen) for our toast!
(I couldn’t resist and took a sip before snapping the photo, hehe.)
My son ordered a Calpis (300 yen).

After much agonizing, I went with:
Shima-rakkyo Tempura (Okinawan scallion tempura, 600 yen)

Seriously, this is delicious! Crispy on the outside, fluffy inside!
My son loves it too, and ended up eating most of it himself! (T_T)

Next, from the recommendations: Agedashi Shima-dofu (deep-fried Okinawan tofu, 520 yen)
It’s topped with āsā (Okinawan sea lettuce).
This is the perfect drinking snack!

My son’s go-to favorite: Okinawa Soba (650 yen)
(They kindly left out the pickled red ginger for him — so thoughtful!)

He even drained the broth! (How embarrassing!)

And a takeout-only special, the Pork-Egg Onigiri (100 yen) — though we got to enjoy ours inside the restaurant!

It’s a beautiful trio of egg, SPAM, and kombu seaweed! So good!
My son cleaned the plate in no time!

For me, a Shikuwasa Highball (Okinawan citrus shochu cocktail, 490 yen) and…

also an Awamori (Okinawan rice spirit, 550 yen)! (Am I drinking too much? Lol)

And to finish, dessert: Blue Seal Beni-imo (purple sweet potato) Ice Cream (380 yen)!

Blue Seal is THE iconic Okinawan ice cream brand.
A side note: my favorites at Blue Seal are the beni-imo and shio-chinsuko (salted Okinawan cookie) flavors. (Why am I confessing this?!)

So here’s a confession — this day actually happened to be my birthday (don’t ask how old I turned!), and I just HAD to have Okinawan food. Mission accomplished — totally satisfied!
Coming here was absolutely the right call ^_^

Restaurants that rely on dinner service are going through really tough times right now.
If you’re in the area, please come dine in or grab some takeout to support them!
