A Sarukuma writer visits “Kochibiyori” in Kashimoto-machi Sho, Yamaga City, and shares the full story — including family-friendly features, access, and opening hours.
Welcome to Kochibiyori
Hello, travelers!
This is Binako, your Sarukuma writer (and yes, I’ve been overspending lately — pretending to repent as we speak!).
Today I’m taking you to a wonderfully atmospheric little spot tucked away in Kashimoto-machi Sho, Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
Kochibiyori (東風日和 – こちびより –).

The traditional wooden exterior radiates a beautiful sense of history — the kind of place that feels like a piece of old Japan you stumble upon by chance.
There’s a generous gravel parking lot right out front.
If you’re pushing a stroller, just watch your step on the gravel.
Walk a little deeper onto the property and a beautifully renovated moss-blue entrance comes into view.
Right next to it sits a vintage well — it instantly took me back to my grandparents’ house in the countryside.
Across from the well, you’ll find a charming wooden table and chairs, perfect for soaking in the atmosphere.
Kochibiyori’s gentle, slow-living concept is woven into every detail — and the moment you step in, you feel it.
Even better: the building is a 150-year-old traditional Japanese farmhouse that once served as a local clinic.
That explains the wonderfully lived-in, soulful character.

Inside, the floor is a traditional doma (packed-earth entryway) and the air carries that warm, nostalgic scent of old wood and home.
It almost made me want to call out “tadaima!” (“I’m home!”).
Step up onto the raised tatami area and you’ll find a cozy semi-private room equipped with a baby chair and a baby basket (Moses basket).
There’s also a sofa-style seating area, ideal for relaxing and lingering over a long lunch.
And there’s a separate, more spacious annex room as well.
This space also comes equipped with a baby chair and Moses basket.
It’s wonderfully easy to visit with little ones in tow.
Picture books and cookbooks line the walls, so kids (and curious adults!) won’t get bored.
The café also doubles as a tiny shop selling lifestyle goods and crafts — a lovely way to spend any waiting time.
Kochibiyori’s Must-Try Menu

Here’s the menu.
The current lineup looks like this:
This time, I tried the Hearty Vegetable Soup (Taberu Yasai no Soup) paired with an onigiri (Japanese rice ball).
A bowl loaded with vegetables and a boiled egg.
Every ingredient feels like it’s giving your body a hug — even before you’ve taken the first sip.
If you take leftovers home, please transfer them to another dish before reheating
(don’t microwave the takeout container itself).
Burdock root, zucchini, carrots, onions… and is that mochi-mugi (pearled barley)? It adds a delightful little pop in every spoonful ♪
The menu features locally grown, locally sourced ingredients,
so every bite tastes like a gentle introduction to the bounty of rural Kumamoto.

The onigiri is made with locally grown rice — a salt onigiri shaped from a custom blend of different rice varieties.
Spoon up the soup, savor the natural sweetness of the vegetables, then take a bite of warm rice ball in your other hand.
It was, quite simply, a moment of pure happiness… (*´ω`*)
A nostalgic interior, a gentle, healing meal — Kochibiyori delivers on every level.
