Introducing Tezukuri Pan Papy

Hello there!
I keep telling myself I’ll start a home workout routine, but somehow time just keeps slipping by.
This is Binako, your SaruKuma writer!

Today I’m excited to introduce you to
“Tezukuri Pan no Mise Papy” (Handmade Bread Shop Papy),
located in Watarokuni, Chuo-ku, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

You’ll find this charming bakery along Keimusho-dori (Prison Street) in the Watarokuni neighborhood β™ͺ

The shop opens early at 8:30 AM,
making it perfect for grabbing a quick breakfast on your way to work or sightseeing.

You can park right in front of the shop, or in front of the neighboring store as well.

The blackboard outside displays Papy’s signature picks, new arrivals, and the monthly business calendar.

Every Tuesday is [Shokupan (Loaf Bread) Service Day]
Every Thursday is [Soft French & Brown Rice Bread Service Day]
These weekly specials are a wonderful bonus for regulars and visitors alike.

Inside the shop, you’ll find a beautiful array of carefully wrapped breads in every imaginable variety.

Here’s the must-try favorite: the Salt Butter Bread (Shio Butter Pan, 97 yen).

It’s surprisingly generous in size, yet costs less than 100 yen β€” talk about a bargain!

And these are the stars of the Thursday Service Day lineup:
the Brown Rice Bread (Genmai Bread) and Soft French Bread (note: baguettes are not included).

Even at the regular price these are already a steal, and they get even cheaper on Thursdays.
Definitely worth planning a Thursday visit!

On the right is one of their newer creations: the Salted Caramel Bread (Shio Caramel, 140 yen).

One of Papy’s signature charms is how often new items appear on the shelves.
Every visit brings a delightful “What’s new today?” moment of anticipation.

There’s also a generous selection of sweet pastries (kashi-pan).

Take a closer look β€”
Just 108 yen including tax!

It’s such a relief to find crowd-pleasing breads at these prices.

The savory bread (sozai-pan) selection is just as impressive.

The Coarse-Ground Chorizo Bread (129 yen) and Curry Bread (Kare-Pan, 108 yen) are particularly popular.
If you love a bit of heat, the chorizo is a must-try.

The fridge also stocks juices and other drinks, so you can grab a bread-and-beverage combo for the road β™ͺ

Recommended Items at Tezukuri Pan Papy

This time, I picked up the
[Salt Butter Bread], [Choco Cornet],
[Salted Caramel], and [Coarse-Ground Chorizo] to taste-test!

Note: this isn’t just a salt bread β€” it’s a salt butter bread!

The fluffy, pillowy dough is heavenly.
With every bite, the salt deepens and the buttery aroma blooms β€” a combination that is pure, comforting bliss.

Next up: the [Salted Caramel].

The sweetness of caramel meets a crown of rock salt for that irresistible sweet-and-salty magic. Sweet-and-salty is justice, in my book.

The crunchy nut accents make every bite dangerously addictive.

Then there’s the [Coarse-Ground Chorizo].

The shape of the bun makes it really easy to eat.
Beneath a gentle hint of sweetness, a bold and lingering spice kicks in.
If you love spicy food, you’ll definitely fall for this one.

The crisp, fresh onion adds a wonderful crunch as well.

And a kid-favorite classic: the [Choco Cornet].

I can never resist buying a Choco Cornet whenever I spot one at a bakery.
This one was overflowing with rich chocolate cream β€” my son was completely smitten.

The shop staff were warm and welcoming, taking time to explain each bread carefully β€” truly a lovely experience.

Whether you’re a student, a busy parent, or a curious traveler, Tezukuri Pan Papy is a wonderful little stop.
Definitely add it to your Kumamoto itinerary!
