Introducing HANA no GAKKO

Hello travelers! This is Aikero, writer for Sarukuma.

Today I’m taking you to a hidden gem tucked away in Tobase, Misumi-machi, Uki City —
HANA no GAKKO (literally “The Flower School”).
Have you ever heard of Tobase Island?
It’s a small island just over an hour’s relaxed drive from central Kumamoto City, sitting along the route toward Amakusa. Many visitors know it for Wakamiya Beach, a popular swimming spot in summer.

Tobase Island is also known as “Flower Island” — and for good reason! It’s one of Japan’s leading producers of orchids. Until March 2022, the island was home to “Hana no Gakko” (The Flower School), a facility where guests could view, purchase, and learn about the island’s famous orchids while touring the greenhouses.
After closing temporarily due to the impact of COVID-19, the spot was reborn out of a passion to revitalize the local community —
on July 11, 2024, it reopened as the multi-purpose facility “HANA no GAKKO”
!

With a slogan of “A place you can’t help but want to stay,” it’s designed to be enjoyed solo or with the whole family.

Let me show you around!
I forgot to snap a photo, but the parking lot is right in front of the facility. Heads up — the parking lot at Wakamiya Beach is paid, so don’t mix them up.
The logo is stylish and playful — but is its shape just a little unusual?
Ta-da! The logo is actually based on the floor plan of HANA no GAKKO itself! Designing a logo straight from architectural blueprints — what a brilliant touch.

The facility includes a café, shop, botanical garden, and an intriguing workshop space — more on that soon!
Right at the entrance, you’ll find a beautiful orchid sales corner. Different growers specialize in different varieties — large, small, rare types — and you can really feel each grower’s expertise.
Next up — the select shop. The staff curate items based on a simple principle: “Things we genuinely love and want to share.” Every product comes from makers whose stories you can connect with.
For example, these elegant bamboo chopsticks from Yamachiku, a craftsman in Nankan-machi, Kumamoto.
You can pick them up and feel them in your hands — perfect for finding the right pair.
There are tons of carefully chosen goods from across Kumamoto and beyond — perfect for unique souvenirs!
And did you notice something else?

The floor is covered in soft wood shavings — gentle and pleasant under your feet. Just be aware: pushing a stroller is a bit tricky on this surface.
Simple, chic ceramic dishware — the kind of pieces you’ll grow more attached to with every use.
Look closer at this pesticide-free apple juice from Yamagata Prefecture — flavors like “Sour Apple” and “Slightly Bitter Apple”! Mix it with sparkling water and you’ve got something close to cider.
Each product is presented with care, and you can feel the maker’s story behind every item.
Even the seasonings used in the café are available for purchase — take a piece of the experience home with you!
Behind the shop area, you’ll find the entrance to the greenhouse — and that workshop space we mentioned earlier!

The motto here? “Just give it a try.”
HANA no GAKKO aims to be “the world’s most blooming place for the spirit of trying new things,” encouraging people to be honest with their own instincts. Workshops for both adults and children are held in this lush, plant-filled space — ideal for getting fully absorbed in something creative.
The botanical garden is home to a wonderful variety — phalaenopsis (moth orchids), staghorn ferns, succulents, and more. Near the exit, look for leaves so massive they could practically be umbrellas for a child!
An art space framing the scenery of Tobase Island like a living photograph.
Traveling with little ones? There’s a dedicated nursing and diaper-changing room with air conditioning, a fan, a changing mat, and baby wipes provided.
The café space is filled with bright, vitamin-color tones that instantly lift your mood.
Each table is decorated with a fresh flower — such a lovely touch! There’s plenty of seating, perfect for lingering conversations over good food.
These aren’t chairs — they’re side tables. The kind of cozy nook where you’d love to sip a coffee and dive into a good book.
Families will appreciate the kids’ chairs and child-sized cutlery — both available!
Here’s the menu. The dishes are designed around locally grown Uki vegetables, with a concept of “meals you can easily recreate at home.”
Fun fact: the Lu Rou Fan (Taiwanese-style braised pork rice) is a personal favorite of PR manager Hiroshi Nakagawa — it made it onto the menu after he kept suggesting it!
You can order at the register or directly from your smartphone — there’s a QR code card at every table for easy ordering.

Recommended Menu at HANA no GAKKO

First up: the Tobase Plate – ¥1,200
A generous salad, roast pork, ratatouille, pickles, kinpira (sautéed root vegetables), quiche, and an onigiri rice ball. Loaded with vegetables — your body will thank you! Every bite is perfectly seasoned and absolutely delicious.
Lu Rou Fan Plate – ¥1,200
The aromatic spices are pure appetite-fuel — and the rich braised pork is an absolutely perfect match for steamed white rice!

Kids’ Plate – ¥700
Omurice (omelet rice), mini hamburger steak, salad… having a proper kids’ menu while traveling really makes a difference for families!

HANA no GAKKO even offers baby food, with options for different ages — chopped or pureed textures. While it’s not allergy-specific, it’s a huge help for parents wanting to travel light.
There’s one more room I haven’t shown you yet! You’ll need to remove your shoes here — it’s wonderfully cool, has toys for kids, and amazingly, eating and drinking are allowed!

So that’s exactly where I had my meal. They mentioned a log-style table is being added soon.
Of course, the kids went straight for the toys — would have loved them to eat first, but oh well!

A vegetable garden and outdoor park are also planned for the future, so be sure to follow their Instagram for updates.

“We want to bring Tobase to life and pass on its charm to the future.”

That passionate spirit fills every corner of HANA no GAKKO.
With this place at its heart, it’s exciting to imagine how Tobase Island will continue to grow.

Cross the Tobase Bridge and step into a quiet, nature-rich island where time seems to flow more slowly.
Whether you’re an adult or a child, HANA no GAKKO is one of those rare places you simply won’t want to leave.
