About Kusaha Mochi Honpo

Hello, lovely travelers!
This is Maru, a writer for SaruKuma πŸ™‚πŸ™ƒ

Today I’m taking you to a true Kumamoto gem located in Minami-Sendanbatake-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City β€”
“Kusaha Mochi Honpo”.

It’s a long-established mochi shop, but you can also enjoy okowa (steamed sticky rice) set meals and a variety of traditional Japanese sweets right inside the store!

The wonderfully atmospheric building lives up to its long-established reputation.

You’ll find it along the approach road to Fujisaki-gu Shrine β€” making it the perfect spot to drop by on your way to or from the shrine (^^)

Parking is available behind the shop, with space for two cars.

The interior has such a warm, nostalgic feel β€” you might just find yourself wanting to say “I’m home!” the moment you step inside.

There are table seats…

…and traditional tatami rooms with a classic tokonoma alcove. Many families with kids visit, and the spacious tatami area is perfect for relaxing with little ones πŸ‘¦πŸ‘§

From the tatami room, you can enjoy a charming view of the traditional Japanese garden. All the lush greenery is genuinely soothing πŸŒ³πŸƒ

Takeaway items like monaka (wafer sweets) and okowa were beautifully displayed at the storefront too.

Drink Menu.

Amazake β€” known as the “drinkable IV drip” for its nourishing qualities. A soy milk amazake latte?! Now that’s something to try (οΎŸβˆ€οΎŸ)

The shiratama (rice flour dumpling) menu offers plenty of choices, too.

I’m so curious about the coffee zenzai (sweet bean soup with coffee)!

Shaved Ice (Kakigori) Menu.

You can enjoy a wonderfully crunchy, old-fashioned style of kakigori here.
They even serve unique creations like ice zenzai β€” a specialty you won’t easily find elsewhere (^^)

Perfect for summer β€” kuzukiri (chilled arrowroot noodles).

Mochi Menu.

So many varieties to choose from β€” it’s a delicious dilemma! (^^)

Beyond sweets, you can even enjoy a full okowa set meal here (^O^)

Recommended Menu Items at Kusaha Mochi Honpo

This time, while gazing at the lovely garden, we ordered the following.

The staff were so kind and patient as we agonized over whether to order kakigori too (^^;;

Anmitsu β€” 670 yen.

Wow! What a stunning presentation!
And that purple tray is such a clever finishing touch. So many of my favorites all on one plate β€” pure happiness 😍😍

Drizzle generously with kuromitsu (black sugar syrup) and dig in.

Underneath you’ll find kanten jelly and other treats, creating a beautiful harmony of traditional Japanese sweets that fills you with pure joy (^^)

And here we have the Cream Shiratama β€” 570 yen.

Just look at that gorgeous, glossy shine on those shiratama dumplings 😍😍

As you’d expect from a true mochi specialist, they go down silky-smooth β€” absolutely sublime πŸ˜‹

“My old family home had a cabinet just like this one,” I thought to myself, soaking in the warm, unhurried atmosphere 🎢

Above all, the friendly, welcoming staff made for an incredibly cozy visit. We can’t recommend it enough β€” go and experience it for yourself! οΌΌ(^o^)/
