Introducing Layers Coffee

Hello there!
It’s Maru, writer for SaruKuma πŸ™‚πŸ™ƒ

Today we’re heading to Harutake-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, to visit “Layers Coffee”.

This stylish cafe opened in May 2021! πŸ‘πŸ‘

Layers Coffee specializes in specialty coffee β€” beans with exceptional, distinctive flavor characteristics that have been carefully sourced and roasted. If you’re a coffee lover visiting Kumamoto, this is a must-visit spot β˜•

The building itself caught my eye long before I went in β€” it’s effortlessly chic. Parking is conveniently located right next to the cafe.

Here’s a fun fact: this is actually a complex facility. The first floor houses three shops β€” a cafe, a flower shop, and a green plant shop β€” while the second floor is occupied by a home builder’s showroom.

Step inside and you’ll find a wonderfully open, spacious interior.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the green of leafy houseplants and the bright colors of early-spring cut flowers β€” each shop blending seamlessly to create a uniquely inviting atmosphere.

Here’s the cafe corner. You order at the counter.

Sun-drenched table seating awaits…

There are also cozy two-person tables, perfect for solo travelers or couples.

On the day I visited, a pop-up clothing shop was set up inside β€” the kind of unexpected encounter that makes a visit here feel extra special!

A bright red vintage car sits inside as part of the decor β€” a striking accent piece. The vehicle on display is rotated from time to time, so you might see something different on your visit!

Now to the flower shop corner 🌼

You’ll find rare and unusually colored blooms here that are simply enchanting πŸ’• Tulips, freesias, and other early-spring flowers are also in stock β€” a true taste of spring before the season has even arrived…

The colorful vases on display are gorgeous too β€” a wonderful keepsake idea.

And here’s the green plant shop. Lush plants are scattered all around the space β€” and yes, every one of them is for sale. Their soothing presence is the perfect companion to a great cup of coffee 🌿

Recommended Menu at Layers Coffee

Here’s the menu.

Sadly, the Drip Coffee Premium (1,000 yen) was sold out the day I visited β€” definitely tempting for the coffee curious! Coffee can be customized to your liking.

Sandwiches are also on offer.

And these are the takeaway packages β€” gorgeously designed and ideal as souvenirs or gifts to bring home from your Kumamoto trip.

This time I ordered a Cafe Latte (500 yen) and an Almond CanelΓ© (300 yen).

I managed to capture this almost gallery-worthy shot β€” the play of light and shadow is just beautiful.

The carefully crafted coffee greets you with an aroma that drifts through the senses, and the rich flavor warms you straight to the heart β˜•

Next time, I want to try the drip coffee black. According to the staff, the bean’s natural flavors really shine through β€” even people who normally find coffee too bitter can enjoy it!

The canelΓ© is delightfully crisp on the outside and soft and moist on the inside, with a gentle sweetness that pairs beautifully with the coffee.

Be sure to stop by Layers Coffee on your next visit to Kumamoto and savor a truly special cup of specialty coffee ✨
