Welcome to Bakery Works

Hello there!
This is Binako, your Sarukuma writer who simply can’t quit ice cream, no matter the season!

Today I’m thrilled to introduce you to a charming little bakery tucked away in Otohime, Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture:
“Bakery Works”.

Just look at that exterior!
The red walls beautifully complement the red brick building, and the colorful bench out front adds a storybook touch that’s perfect for photos.

The parking lot is a gravel area directly across the street from the shop.

Inside, the shelves are lined with all kinds of beautiful breads.
The bakery is run by a lovely husband-and-wife team, and they were absolutely delightful β€” warmly watching over my excited little boy as he bounced around the shop.

Every loaf and pastry baked by this wonderful couple looks so tempting that simply browsing feels therapeutic.

From savory filled rolls (sozai-pan) to sweet pastries (kashi-pan), there’s something perfect whether you’re after a light lunch or a quick afternoon treat.

They also offer Japanese-style shokupan (fluffy milk bread loaves) β€” ideal for breakfast at your hotel or guesthouse.
It’s so good, you’d happily bring a loaf along as a gift when visiting friends.

And here’s a delightful surprise β€” they also serve pizza!
It’s baked fresh after you order, so you get to enjoy it piping hot straight from the oven β€” what a treat.
It makes the perfect companion for a scenic drive through the Aso countryside.

While I was choosing my breads, the owners offered me a generous tasting sample.
It was so substantial, I almost felt like I was getting too much β€” pure Japanese hospitality at its best!

Must-Try Items at Bakery Works

I picked up these three irresistible treats.
Honestly, they were practically begging to be eaten β€” and how could I refuse?

Strawberry Croissant
Flaky, buttery layers wrapped around a not-too-sweet whipped cream filling.
The combination with juicy, tangy fresh strawberries is absolutely irresistible.

This is a flavor you simply can’t find anywhere else β€” pure Bakery Works magic.

And there’s a surprise: a layer of chocolate beneath the cream that adds the perfect accent.
The texture is so light and airy that I devoured the whole thing in seconds.

Choco Cornet β€” my son’s favorite.
This classic Japanese pastry is shaped like a cone and filled with chocolate cream.

The rich, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate filling was right up his alley β€” he didn’t slow down for a second, completely lost in chocolate bliss.

Curry, Cheese & Sausage Bread
(Apologies β€” I forgot the exact name of this one!)

The spicy kick of Japanese curry blends beautifully with the juicy sausage inside.
The crispy bits of melted cheese that overflowed and baked onto the surface are like a snack within a snack.

Even my son declared, “It’s spicy, but it’s so good!!” while happily savoring this grown-up flavor.

As I expected, the breads baked by this wonderful couple were absolutely amazing.

If you’re exploring the Aso area, do yourself a favor and stop by β€” you won’t regret it!
