Welcome to Suzume to Ho
Hello, travelers! I’m Gachako, a writer for Sarukuma.
Today, I’m taking you to Wafu in Kikuchi City to visit
Suzume to Ho, a hidden gem of a bakery.

This wonderful bakery is run by a Taiwanese owner!
Funny enough, the nearby Mei Tou Hua café we recently featured also serves authentic Taiwanese sweets.
A trip to Kikuchi will give you a wonderful little taste of Taiwan right here in Kumamoto ♪

When the bakery is open, you’ll spot this lovely traditional noren curtain hanging out front.
Very easy to find!

Convenient parking is available right in front of Suzume to Ho.

Step inside and you’re greeted by an incredible variety of breads on display!
The aroma of freshly baked bread fills the air — absolutely heavenly.

And here it is — the famous Taiwanese green onion bread!
This is a beloved staple you’ll find in every traditional Taiwanese bakery.

From hearty savory options that work perfectly as a light lunch…

…all the way to indulgent sweet pastries — there’s truly something for every craving.

Just look at those cinnamon rolls piled high with creamy frosting — they look absolutely irresistible.

The central table showcases simple essentials like white bread (shokupan) and baguettes.

You’ll also find an inviting selection of baked sweets from a local artisan.
Everything here is made with wholesome, body-friendly ingredients — and they sell out fast, so come early!

There’s even a charming “donated paper bag” corner.
It’s a lovely way to feel the kindness of the local community.
The staff at Suzume to Ho are equally warm and welcoming — this is a bakery that truly leaves you with a heartwarming feeling.
Recommended Picks at Suzume to Ho

Choosing was no easy task with so many delicious options… in the end, I went home with the Taiwanese Green Onion Bread (220 yen), Taiwanese Coconut Bread (250 yen), Cinnamon Roll (250 yen), focaccia, and a loaf of shokupan.

While it was still warm from the oven, I dove straight into the Taiwanese Green Onion Bread.
Just look at the gorgeous, generous mountain of green onions piled on top — somehow staying perfectly in place!
The roasted white parts of the onion bring out a wonderful natural sweetness and aroma you simply can’t resist.
So good! The bread itself is light and fluffy — I devoured it in no time.
