About Mei Tou Hua
Hello travelers! This is Gachako, writer for Sarukuma.
Today I’m taking you to Waifu in Kikuchi City, home to a specialty shop dedicated to the beloved Taiwanese dessert known as douhua (tofu pudding) β Mei Tou Hua.
I had tried their desserts at a pop-up event before they opened their permanent location, so I had been eagerly waiting to finally visit the shop itself.

Look for the bright red logo β that’s your landmark. There are about two parking spots right next to the shop.
If they’re full, you may be able to use the parking lot of the construction company across the street, but please confirm with the staff first.

Right across from Mei Tou Hua, there’s a small public park with a free ashiyu (foot bath)!
Grabbing a takeout dessert and enjoying it while soaking your feet sounds like the perfect plan as the weather cools down.

Inside the shop β it’s just so cute! Seriously, every corner is adorable!
There are 3 counter seats and 2 tables.

Taiwanese knick-knacks scattered throughout the space add to the charming, transportive atmosphere.

And here’s the traditional Japanese-style zashiki tatami seating area.
The owner has impeccable taste β every detail of the display is on point.
The staff warmly welcome families with kids, so this is a wonderful spot for parents needing a little breather.

For this visit, the Sarukuma editor-in-chief joined me as well.
The whole atmosphere had us buzzing with that fun, away-from-the-everyday feeling.

You’ll want to order and pay first, then take your seat.
Our editor was deep in concentration deciding which toppings to choose.
What is douhua? It’s a silky-smooth Taiwanese dessert made from soy milk that slips down beautifully.
Highly nutritious and only lightly sweetened, it’s a treat that’s kind to both your body and your skin.
You can choose your douhua with either 5 toppings or 3 toppings.
The lineup changes seasonally, but on the day we visited, the choices included white wood ear mushrooms, white tapioca pearls, black rice, mung beans, taro balls (yu yuan), Job’s tears (adlay), red beans, and peanuts.
As you can see, each ingredient is paired with its traditional health benefits β and the more you read, the harder the choice becomes!
Detox? Diet support? It’s hard not to be tempted (lol).
You can also add extra toppings if you’d like.
Mei Tou Hua also serves a great drink menu, including Taiwanese oolong tea, Chinese tea, and refreshing lemon ai-yu jelly drinks made with natural plant gelatin.

We tried the seasonal pear and Kyoho grape douhua (no longer available now) along with the 5-topping douhua!

The Kyoho grapes were carefully peeled, deseeded, and gently compoted by hand.
Every bite bursts with the juicy flavors of the season.

The syrup is made from pear, giving the douhua a light, refreshing finish.
The douhua itself is gently sweet thanks to the natural soy milk.
When you pair a spoonful with the syrup, you really get that delightful dessert experience.

And here’s the editor’s 5-topping douhua.
A stunning lineup of beauty and wellness ingredients β red beans, white wood ear mushrooms, Job’s tears, and more.
Thanks to all the legumes, you also get a satisfying serving of plant-based protein.
