Orchid Parlor in Tobase, Uki City: A Tropical Hideaway on Kumamoto’s Flower Island
2024.09.13

A Sarukuma writer visits “Orchid Parlor” on Tobase Island in Uki City’s Misumi Town. We share family-friendly tips, access information, and opening hours.
Welcome to Orchid Parlor
Hello travelers, this is Aikero, a writer for Sarukuma!
The mornings and evenings here in Kumamoto are slowly cooling down, but before summer fully fades, I wanted to share a spot that gives off pure tropical island vibes (●^o^●)
Today’s destination is Orchid Parlor, tucked away in Tobase, Misumi Town, Uki City.
Do you know what “Orchid” in the shop’s name refers to? In Japanese, the word for orchid is “yoran” — and this little parlor is named after the beautiful tropical flower itself.
The parlor sits on Tobase Island, nicknamed “Flower Island” because flower cultivation — especially orchids — thrives here. Orchid Parlor is run by Yamamoto Yoran, a grower that specializes in mid-sized orchid varieties.
Right next door you’ll also find HANA no GAKKO (Flower School), a charming complex featuring a café, orchid displays, lifestyle goods, and hands-on workshops. It’s well worth a visit while you’re on the island♪
Let’s take a closer look!
Getting here is easy — the roads are simple to follow, and a big roadside sign marks the entrance.
On a clear day, eating outside would feel wonderful — but Kumamoto summers can be intense, so please watch out for heatstroke!
The donut and hot dog-shaped chairs were too cute not to photograph♪
Parking is conveniently located right in front of the shop.
The staff kindly told us, “The eat-in space is nice and cool inside,” so we headed straight in.
The air conditioning felt like heaven on a hot day!
Inside you’ll find table seating in a stylish, plant-filled space (●^o^●)
Look closely toward the back and you can catch a glimpse of the orchid greenhouse!
When you’re done eating, please return your tray here (^^)/
The eat-in area connects to a direct-sales shop where you can browse succulents, planters, and more.
There are even adorable animal-shaped planters — picking a favorite is half the fun♪
“They have ice cream!” someone shouted — and look how cute the display is!
Here’s the menu — drinks, light bites like hot dogs and fries, plus soft-serve ice cream and sundaes.
The hot dog comes as a value set with fries♪
The sundae lineup is full of tempting flavors, and if you’re indecisive like me, there’s good news — you can order a half-and-half combination!
*Note: the Passion Butter flavor incurs a small surcharge for half-and-half orders.
The hot dogs look popular here — but since I’d already had lunch, that adventure will have to wait until next time♪
Orchid Parlor — Recommended Menu
I went for a Dragon Fruit and Passion Butter half-and-half (●^o^●)
I’m a huge fan of tropical fruit!
First up — the dragon fruit!
The color is absolutely gorgeous (●^o^●)
The flavor is light and naturally sweet without any aftertaste, pairing beautifully with soft-serve ice cream!
And here’s the Passion Butter.
It holds its own next to both the dragon fruit and the soft-serve — a rich, deeply sweet flavor that was incredibly delicious (*^^)
Tobase Island is just over an hour from central Kumamoto City — perfect for a scenic drive. Be sure to add Orchid Parlor to your itinerary (●^o^●)
