Introducing Kadofuji Warabi Mochi Specialty Shop
Hello travelers! I’m Aikero, a writer for SaruKuma.
Today I’m excited to introduce a hidden gem located in Hirayama-Shinmachi, Yatsushiro City:
Kadofuji — a Warabi Mochi Specialty Shop
This warabi mochi specialty shop sits just across the Kuma River from central Yatsushiro. I’ve actually been here several times before, and I’m finally getting the chance to share it with you!
But before we dive in — if you’re making the trip to Yatsushiro, you absolutely have to try the local food scene! And SaruKuma has previously covered some fantastic family-friendly parks with large playground equipment and parking, so be sure to check those out too.
Within a 5–10 minute drive from Kadofuji, you’ll find:
Niko Pan, known for delicious hard-crust bread
Niko Pan (Midorimachi, Yatsushiro): The Adorable Bakery That’ll Make You Smile
Hinagu Dreamland Sea-Yu-Yu, a spacious park with ocean-themed playground equipment
Kentaro, one of Kumamoto’s three most famous Sanuki udon shops, with the warmest welcome for families
If you’re willing to travel about 15 minutes, you’ll also discover:
Shin-Yatsushiro Station Gamesan Park, where you can spot the Shinkansen and enjoy large playground equipment
Ryuho Yamabiko Park, perfect for little ones with its gentle (not too big) roller slide
Eco Eight Yatsushiro Green Park, a wide-open park with refreshing sea breezes and ocean-themed equipment
Yatsushiro is packed with delicious eats and family-friendly parks with full parking facilities — make the most of your visit!
Okay, sorry for the long intro! The shop sits right along Route 3, so it’s easy to find.
This is the signboard you’ll see coming from central Yatsushiro.
The lot directly under the sign is Kadofuji’s dedicated parking, while other spots are shared with neighboring shops — just park wherever’s convenient.
Wisteria flowers (“fuji” in Japanese, hence the name!) drape over the entrance. Step inside, and the atmosphere shifts completely — like crossing into another world.
Inside, you’ll find a beautifully arranged display case
and a cozy eat-in space.

Recommended Menu Items at Kadofuji
Even with the seasonal options tempting me, I always end up ordering the strawberry latte. The gorgeous layers of warabi mochi, strawberry confiture, and milk are stunning!
There’s a designated photo spot, so don’t forget to snap a picture!
Once you’ve captured those beautiful contrasts, stir thoroughly until everything blends into a single color! Mix it more than you think you should!
The warabi mochi is so silky and stretchy that you’ll need to suck pretty hard through the straw — ha!
Oh, this is unbeatable. It’s not the typical sugary strawberry milk flavor — it’s a sophisticated strawberry latte where you can taste the genuine sweet-tart strawberry. But beware: if your kids steal a sip, you might not get any back. With real strawberry pieces inside, it’s incredibly satisfying!
This is my first time trying this one!
According to the staff: “You can choose your warabi mochi from Fukuyutaka soybean, deep-roasted, or black sesame. It’s a really popular item, and we often sell out when the mochi runs out. The black sugar syrup gives it a unique twist in flavor.”
On weekends, the warabi mochi often sells out, so consider yourself lucky if it’s available! It’s also more affordable than buying a full box, which is part of why it’s so popular.
I picked my favorite, black sesame. Can you see how meltingly soft it is?
Whipped cream and warabi mochi aren’t just “good friends” — they’re a match made in heaven! The rich kuromitsu (black sugar syrup) adds the perfect accent. Some people who don’t normally enjoy black sesame on its own actually love it with the kuromitsu!
My husband loves Kadofuji’s warabi mochi too, so I always grab a home-use pack as a souvenir. The fact that there’s a casual home-use option is a huge plus in my book.
Hunting through the kinako (roasted soybean flour) to find the warabi mochi — there it is! Lift it with chopsticks and watch it droop under its own weight!
Even without kuromitsu, you get a gentle natural sweetness. The fragrant, slightly nutty kinako balances beautifully with the subtle sweetness — truly elegant! But since the whipped cream warabi mochi was incredible with kuromitsu, I’m definitely going to try it with the syrup next time!
Whenever I’m in Yatsushiro, I’ll go out of my way to visit Kadofuji — it’s that good! The warabi mochi makes a wonderful gift, but remember the best-by date is just the next day, so plan accordingly.
Come taste the addictively silky warabi mochi and signature drinks — and let yourself fall completely in love with Kadofuji! And while you’re in town, be sure to enjoy Yatsushiro’s amazing food and family-friendly parks too!
