Hello, fellow travelers!

It’s so cold today that I’m sitting hunched up like a schoolkid with my coat draped over my shoulders.
This is Binako, your Sarukuma writer!

Today, I’m taking you to Shiratamakko Kanmi Chaya, a delightful traditional Japanese sweet shop located in Manganji, Minamioguni Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture β€” right within the famous Kurokawa Onsen hot spring village.

I was so eager for shiratama (chewy rice flour dumplings) that I practically dashed all the way here, panting like a marathon runner β€” this place truly is my happy oasis!

Inside the shop, you can also pick up DIY shiratama-making kits and lovely wooden spoons β€” perfect souvenirs to take home!

Making shiratama with your kids at home sounds like such a fun family activity, doesn’t it?

At the back of the seating area, there’s a self-service water station β€” and I love that they even have small cups for children!

Recommended Menu Items

The menu offers both individual dishes and set meals β€” something for every appetite!

Kinako Shiratama (soybean flour) β€” 650 yen
Kurogoma Shiratama (black sesame) β€” 650 yen
Mitarashi Shiratama (sweet soy glaze) β€” 650 yen
Matcha Zenzai (green tea sweet bean soup) β€” 880 yen
Shiratama Zenzai with Vanilla Ice Cream β€” 900 yen
Ippuku Shiratama Set β€” 1,100 yen
Gomamitsu Shiratama Set β€” 935 yen
There are so many shiratama-themed dishes that you’ll find yourself happily torn over what to order!

They also have grilled mochi (yakimochi) zenzai and other rice cake dishes!
A hot bowl of zenzai is just perfect for the chilly seasons ahead.

There are even seasonal limited-edition items, which definitely caught my eye too…

Items marked with a “β€»” symbol on the menu
are available for takeout!
How amazing is it that you can take shiratama to go?!

Kinako Shiratama β€” 650 yen
This was my first pick!

And here’s the wonderful surprise β€” it comes with traditional Japanese pickles on the side.
Even though it’s a single item, it feels like a full set!
Those pickles, by the way, are absolutely incredible…

Kinako never disappoints!
The chewy, soft shiratama dumplings coated in fragrant roasted soybean flour create an absolutely divine combination!
It’s the kind of timeless flavor that everyone β€” young or old β€” instantly falls in love with!

Next up was
Kurogoma Shiratama (black sesame) β€” 650 yen

I really appreciated that they kindly brought out a small plate for my child too!

The rich aroma of black sesame travels from your mouth right up through your nose, soothing your soul.
The black sesame flavor is so robust that with every bite of the chewy shiratama,
the toasty fragrance dances and swirls beautifully across your palate.

Both the kinako and the kurogoma versions were absolutely outstanding!
And since they offer takeout, even busy travelers can grab some to enjoy on the go.
If you’re short on time, definitely give the takeout option a try!
