About the Cafe

Hello there!
This is Maru, writer for Sarukuma.

Today, I’m introducing
a wonderfully photogenic cafe famous for creative French cuisine, galettes, and waffles!
Tucked away in Shimotori, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, you’ll find
“Chocolat Cafe Bistro.”

Even the exterior oozes style!
You’ll find it on Shower Street (Shawa-dori), in the heart of the Shimotori shopping arcade.

There’s even a charming terrace seating area right by the entrance.

Inside, the cafe is intimate and cozy, with a mix of table and counter seating.

The Instagram-worthy interior features
deep crimson walls, a glittering chandelier, and one-of-a-kind artworks…
It’s the perfect setting for a girls’ lunch or a romantic date!

The decorative pieces are all creations by sculptural artist gaju, and many of them are also available for purchase.

I picked up a brochure and learned that
the cafe can be booked exclusively for private weddings.
They even rent out original dresses designed by gaju!
It’s the perfect spot for a special anniversary or memorable occasion (=^^=)

Here’s the lunch menu.
Choose a lunch with a drink, or upgrade to a course lunch with both a waffle and a drink!

And here’s the buckwheat-flour
galette menu 😍

The waffle menu is impressive, too!
The waffles here are generously sized and a real local favorite!

The Galette Sucrée is a dessert version of the savory galette — same buckwheat crepe base, sweet toppings.

Recommended Dishes

This time, I ordered the Ham, Cheese & Egg Galette (850 yen).
For an extra 300 yen during lunchtime, you can add soup, salad, and a drink — a wonderful deal.

First up: a creamy carrot soup 🥕
It arrived in an adorable Polish-made cup that instantly lifted my mood 💛
All the goodness of carrots in one warm, delicious bowl!

The Polish ceramics are also for sale inside the cafe.
They know exactly how to tempt me — souvenir shopping danger zone! www (´∀`*)

And then, the star of the show arrived!
The buckwheat galette ✨
Served with a fresh side salad!

A galette is a traditional dish from the Brittany region of France.
It uses a savory, unsweetened crepe-style batter made with buckwheat flour, served as either a hearty meal or a sweet dessert!

Almost too pretty to eat — it looks like edible art.

Pile on the egg, ham, and salad, then dig in…
So delicious! (^O^)
The buckwheat aroma comes through beautifully, and the galette itself is wonderfully flavorful!
That soft-runny egg yolk really steals the show ❤

The crispy edges of the galette are wonderfully toasty and fragrant — another absolute winner!
I polished off the entire plate in no time (=^^=)

I lingered over a relaxing cup of tea afterwards, feeling completely content ( ⁎ᵕᴗᵕ⁎ )❤︎
While there are no children’s chairs, I did spot families with kids stopping by for dessert.
Whether for lunch, a galette, or a waffle treat — definitely give Chocolat Cafe Bistro a try! 😋
