Introducing Yakidokoro Bungoya

Hello there, fellow travelers!

I’m Binako, a SaruKuma writer and mom to a little boy who calls Pocky “those red things” β€” too cute, right?

Today I’m excited to introduce you to Yakidokoro Bungoya, a beloved local karaage (Japanese fried chicken) shop located in Muro, Ozu Town, Kikuchi District, Kumamoto Prefecture.

Bungoya has been around for years, and fun fact β€” my older brother has been a huge fan ever since this place first opened! (My siblings keep popping up in these articles, ha ha.)

The parking lot is conveniently located right in front of the shop! Just a heads-up β€” it’s gravel, so if you’re visiting with a stroller, please watch your step!

Inside, you’ll find a charming counter displaying handmade masks and flyers from neighboring shops β€” a lovely little touch of local community spirit!

Bungoya also serves teishoku (set meals) and offers dine-in seating, with both counter seats and tables available for a relaxed meal!

Right beside the register, you’ll spot Bungoya’s signature yuzu pepper sauce β€” a versatile condiment that pairs beautifully with just about anything!

Yuzu Pepper Sauce β€” 540 yen

Other crowd favorites include:
Sue-chan’s Hormone Stew (offal stew) β€” 648 yen (tax included)
Hormone Karaage (fried offal) β€” 626 yen (tax included)

Takeout is also available β€” perfect for a picnic or a meal back at your hotel!

And plenty more Γ  la carte options to choose from!

They also offer ready-to-go bento boxes β€” ideal for a quick lunch on the go β™ͺ

Jumbo Chicken Cutlet Bento β€” 630 yen

Karaage Nanban Donburi β€” 530 yen
Horse Meat Karaage Curry β€” 630 yen

The Horse Meat Karaage Curry is a Thursday-only special, with just 15 servings available!
If you’ve got your eye on it, get there early β€” it sells out fast!

And there’s even more to explore on the menu!
The Hormone Stew Bento looks absolutely mouthwatering!

This time, I went with the recommended local favorite β€”
the Special Karaage Bento for just 530 yen!

Even though it had cooled a bit by the time I got home, lifting the lid released that irresistible aroma of freshly fried karaage β€” pure happiness!
Each piece is generously sized and incredibly satisfying!

Oh my, this chicken is SO good!
The meat is wonderfully firm, and with each bite, juicy chicken flavor floods your mouth.
That satisfying texture means every chew releases more umami β€”
it’s like a karaage flavor fountain!

Some pieces were absolutely massive!
The seasoning is perfectly balanced and pairs wonderfully with rice.
What a treat that the flavors deepen even after it cools β€” perfect for takeout!

If you’re traveling through Kumamoto, do yourself a favor and stop by β€” you won’t regret it!
