Introducing Omusubi Cafe Wa
Hello travelers! This is Aikero, a writer for Sarukuma.
Since becoming a Sarukuma writer, I’ve been heading out to the Amakusa area more and more often.
Today I’d like to introduce a wonderful spot located in Oyano-machi, Kamiamakusa City:
Omusubi Cafe Wa.
Driving to the Amakusa area takes more than an hour from Kumamoto City.
Bathroom breaks alone aren’t enough for restless kids, and family-friendly restaurants can be hard to find along the way.
Even when you do find one, there’s often nothing on the menu that little ones will eat.
But here at Omusubi Cafe Wa, all those worries melt away!
It’s the perfect lunch spot for families, serving handcrafted rice balls (omusubi) made from carefully sourced ingredients.
And the best part? There’s a dedicated kids’ space!
Located in just the right spot for a driving break, this place is highly recommended for international visitors exploring Amakusa.
At the end of the article, there’s also a special summer event announcement!
Cross the No. 1 Bridge and continue straight along the Amakusa Pearl Line.
Turn left at the intersection where you’ll see Oyano Shopping Plaza Camon on your left, and the café will appear on your right.
Parking is also available in front of the pharmacy next to the shop!
The spacious interior offers both table seating and
traditional Japanese tatami (zashiki) seating — a wonderful chance to experience authentic Japanese dining culture.
The tatami area is roomy enough to relax and enjoy your meal at a leisurely pace.
Kids’ chairs for the tatami area are also available!
Right next to the entrance is the kids’ space.
It’s stocked with so many toys that children can really keep themselves busy!
The shelves are filled with picture books and toys for little ones to enjoy.
Best of all, the kids’ area is visible from anywhere in the restaurant,
so parents can keep an eye on their little ones while enjoying their meal.
The restroom is equipped with a diaper-changing table!
It’s spacious, making it accessible for families with small children as well as wheelchair users.
As you might have guessed,
the owners are parents themselves who are raising young children.
Every detail has been thoughtfully considered — this is truly a warm, welcoming restaurant.
The omusubi (rice balls) at Omusubi Cafe Wa are made with carefully selected ingredients:
・Organic JAS-certified rice from Shichijo, Kikuchi City — grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers!
・Nori seaweed from Kagoshima that hasn’t been acid-treated
・Mineral-rich Amakusa salt made by boiling local seawater
Attention to detail is everywhere!
Vegetables may be low-pesticide depending on the season, but additive-free ingredients are the standard.
The miso, soy sauce, and other seasonings used in the miso soup and tonjiru (pork miso soup) follow the same philosophy.
Seat reservations, omusubi takeout orders, and pre-orders for menu items are all welcome.
Instagram DM is an option, but they may miss messages on busy days, so calling is the most reliable way.
・Komusubi Set: 1,200 yen
(8 mini rice balls, tonjiru pork miso soup)
・Wa Set: 1,100 yen
(2 salt omusubi, tonjiru, drink, petite dessert)
The salt omusubi in the Wa Set can be swapped for brown rice salt omusubi.
For +50 yen and up, you can choose your favorite filling!
The Komusubi Set takes a little time to prepare, so if you’re in a hurry, calling ahead to pre-order is a great idea.
・Kids’ Set: 600 yen
(4 mini rice balls, miso soup, juice)
Parents will love this option!
・Tamago Kake Gohan (rice with raw egg): 380 yen
・Nitamago Don (soy-marinated egg rice bowl): 450 yen
・Buta Don (pork rice bowl): 750 yen
Rice bowl dishes are also on the menu.
For bigger appetites, you can pair a rice bowl with an omusubi!
There are also à la carte options!
On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, croquettes and hamburger steaks are also served.

・Brown rice salt: 220 yen
・Kombu (kelp): 300 yen

Recommended Menu Items at Omusubi Cafe Wa

I ordered the Komusubi Set!
The set comes with 8 different mini rice balls!
Brown rice salt, salt, kinpira, kombu, okaka, sweet & spicy pork, salmon, and tuna mayo.
As the name “komusubi” (mini rice balls) suggests, they’re a perfect bite-sized treat!
The fillings aren’t tucked inside, but the balance with the rice is wonderful.
The kombu tsukudani, okaka, and sweet & spicy pork are all handmade.
The brown rice salt omusubi has a delightful pop-in-your-mouth texture.
I don’t usually eat brown rice, but it was easy to enjoy with a gentle salty flavor!
The tonjiru is made with Amakusa Bairikuporku pork.
It’s loaded with vegetables and served in a big bowl — pure happiness!
They also bring chili pepper (ichimi) so you can adjust to your taste.
The pork’s umami shines through, but the overall flavor is gentle and comforting.
For +250 yen, you can double the portion!
This is the Kids’ Set.
The komusubi includes 2 salt and one each of sweet & spicy pork and okaka.
For the juice, you can choose between apple and mandarin orange.
The size is just right for little hands!
My daughter was hungry and after eating 4, she still said “I want more!”
The staff kindly asked, “Is the miso soup okay without green onions?” — those small, thoughtful gestures make all the difference.
If your child loves green onions, just ask for them included!
This miso soup is also packed with enoki mushrooms and onions, making it incredibly satisfying.
There are monthly special omusubi too!
This is the August-only Curry Omusubi for 350 yen!
The mild curry flavor isn’t spicy, so kids love it!
“This is delicious!” my daughter said, finishing it in no time!
About Omusubi Cafe Wa
I had a chance to chat with the owner about the café.
What made you so committed to high-quality ingredients?
I think other moms who visit really resonate with that philosophy.

I came from the city, and I’m so grateful for the kids’ space where children can let off some steam!
So I thought, why not create one ourselves! That’s how this family-welcoming café came to be.

When we did a popularity ranking, the top spot went to sweet & spicy pork, followed by tuna mayo!
All fillings are handmade, and even the tonjiru is made with kombu dashi stock and no additives.

The attention to detail is incredible — I’m so impressed!
I’ll definitely come back to enjoy a meal next time I visit Kamiamakusa!

Thank you so much for reading this far!
The summer event I mentioned at the beginning is a summer festival!
It will be held on August 16, 2025!
There will be hinoki cypress chopstick-making workshops, doll-scooping games, story readings, and lots of delicious food!
Of course, omusubi and tonjiru will also be on offer!
Bring the whole family and come have some fun!
