2020.10.01

A Sarukuma writer visits Shoroan, a charming baby castella specialty shop located in Kamitori-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City. Prices start from just 500 yen. We’ve also included family-friendly tips, access information, and opening hours.
Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Rikotama, writer for Sarukuma!
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to a delightful little shop in Kamitori-machi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City:
Shoroan.

This adorable shop opened on June 27th along the popular Kamitori shopping arcade, and it’s a specialty store dedicated to baby castella—those bite-sized, slightly sweet sponge cakes that are a beloved Japanese festival treat!
The main shop is based in Kyoto, and this Kumamoto location is their 8th branch.
So glad they made their way to Kumamoto! (*^▽^*)

One of the most fun parts of visiting Shoroan is being able to watch the staff baking baby castella right through the glass window!
When I visited, they were just oiling the molds and getting ready to start a fresh batch.
Recommended Menu

Here’s the menu! All prices include tax.
Large Bag (50 pieces): 1,500 yen
Medium Bag (32 pieces): 1,080 yen
Small Bag (15 pieces): 540 yen
Plus, there are special seasonal flavors: matcha (green tea) on weekdays
and cocoa on weekends!

The matcha flavor is priced slightly differently:
22 pieces: 1,080 yen
10 pieces: 540 yen
Plain & Matcha Mix (18 + 18 pieces): 1,500 yen is also available! ♪
※ I got to sample one of the matcha pieces, and wow—the rich aroma of green tea hit me first, followed by that beautifully sophisticated, slightly bitter finish that adults will adore! (≧▽≦)
It was absolutely my kind of flavor.

Look at this charming paper bag they packaged it in—how stylish! ☆
The sweet, comforting aroma of fresh castella was already drifting out!

I just had to peek inside…
Wow!!! (≧▽≦)
That heavenly aroma! ♡
They’re so adorable! ♡
The little castella were packed in tight and looking absolutely irresistible!
I had planned to bring them home and share with the family, but…

I couldn’t resist trying just one!
The size is absolutely perfect—each one is just the right bite!
Mmmm!!! Delicious! (haha)
The texture is fluffy and chewy on the outside, while the inside stays moist and tender (*´▽`*)
And honestly, the aroma is just out of this world!
Of course, one was never going to be enough—before I knew it, I had popped seven or eight straight into my mouth!
Next time, I’m definitely coming back for the weekend-only cocoa flavor!
If you’re visiting Kumamoto, please stop by Shoroan and treat yourself to a moment of pure happiness! ☆
