A SaruKuma writer visits “Fuku Ohagi” in Yoshimachi, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City. Prices start from 175 yen. Includes family-friendly tips, access, and business hours.
Hello, fellow travelers!
γSaruKumaγ writer Cho-san here!
Today, I’m excited to introduce you to
Yoshimachi, Minami-ku, Kumamoto City‘s hidden gem,
“Fuku Ohagi”!

Can you believe it’s already September?!
(Only four months left in the year…)
With the autumn equinox (Ohigan) just around the corner, I was craving some delicious traditional Japanese sweets, so I headed straight to
“Fuku Ohagi”.
There are three parking spots available right in front of the shop.
The charming name and welcoming storefront definitely build up the anticipation!
And don’t worry β
this place will exceed your expectations!
Since this is a takeout-only shop,
the interior features a row of display cases,
and you simply place your order and pay through the showcase.
If you visit at the right time,
you might even catch a glimpse of the staff hand-crafting these treats!
I arrived around 4:00 PM, just an hour before closing,
so many items were already sold out β I just barely managed
to grab the items I had my heart set on!
As stated on the wooden sign:
“We use absolutely no artificial sweeteners or food coloring,
and everything is handmade,
so the daily quantity available in-store is limited.”
Knowing this gives such peace of mind β you can truly enjoy these sweets worry-free!
They also sell handmade goods like masks and other charming little items.
Recommended Menu Items
The standout star of the show is, without a doubt, the ohagi (sweet rice balls coated in red bean paste)!
Fuku Ohagi: 98 yen
Wonderfully affordable!
But wait β ohagi isn’t the only signature treat here!
Next to it sits the famous Imo Pie (sweet potato pie): 175 yen,
which is incredibly popular with a devoted fan base!
The Fuku Monaka (wafer-style sweet): 120 yen also caught my eye…
For now, I was simply thrilled
to have grabbed the ohagi and Imo Pie just in time!
When chatting with the staff,
they shared that there’s a seasonal special available right now β
Chilled Zenzai with Shiratama (mochi rice balls): 220 yen,
which they highly recommend! Of course, I had to try it!
Brimming with excitement,
I hurried home to dig in!
Ta-da!!!

They even included a card with the shop’s address and phone number,
and it’s absolutely adorable!

The container holding the Chilled Zenzai with Shiratama (220 yen)
features the cutest summer-themed sticker too!
I couldn’t stop admiring all these charming details before even taking a bite…
Time to dig in!
First up, the Fuku Ohagi (98 yen).
The size is just right.
The sweetness of the anko (red bean paste) is perfectly balanced β absolutely delicious!
It has this nostalgic, comforting sweetness.
It reminded me of the ohagi my grandmother used to make for me
(though hers weren’t quite as picture-perfect as these!).
And next, the Imo Pie (175 yen)!
I cut it in half to show you.
Can you see it?
That gloriously packed sweet potato filling!
What a magnificent presence!
One bite and I was absolutely blown away!
The buttery aroma is incredible!
A luxurious blend of sweet potato filling and flaky pastry!
I’m definitely coming back for more!
No wonder this pie has such a loyal following.
And finally, the Chilled Zenzai with Shiratama (220 yen).
It was loaded with plump, generous shiratama mochi balls.
The azuki (red beans) are wonderfully tender,
with a gentle, soothing sweetness β simply divine!
This is a limited-time seasonal offering,
so be sure to try it while it’s available!
As mentioned at the start,
with Ohigan (the equinox) approaching, ohagi often sells out early in the day.
However, you can call ahead to reserve your favorites,
so pre-orders are absolutely an option.
The staff are all incredibly friendly,
and a warm, gentle atmosphere fills the shop!
I’ll definitely be returning to grab the Apple Imo Pie that was sold out during my visit β
I can’t wait to go back!
Why not stop by and treat yourself to these handcrafted Japanese sweets?
