A SaruKuma writer’s firsthand report on “Sukesan Udon” in Kikuyo Town. We’ve also rounded up family-friendly tips, access info, and opening hours.

Hello, fellow travelers!
This is Saa-Mama, a writer for SaruKuma.

Today we’re heading to
Kikuyo Town in Kikuchi District, Kumamoto Prefecture,
to check out “Sukesan Udon”!

Featured on the popular Japanese TV show “Kenmin Show,” this beloved udon chain originally from Kitakyushu has finally arrived in Kumamoto!
The chain operates across four prefectures: Fukuoka, Yamaguchi, Saga, and now Kumamoto.

You’ll find it inside “Avant Mall Kikuyo”, a shopping complex that also houses popular Japanese stores like Nishimatsuya (baby & kids), Sanki, and TSUTAYA.

The mall even has a Starbucks attached to TSUTAYA and a supermarket nearby, so you can easily knock out shopping, coffee, and a meal all in one trip β€” perfect for travelers on a tight schedule.

Must-Try Menu Items

This time, I tried the #1 best-seller: the Niku Gobo Ten Udon for Β₯700 (add Β₯80 for a large portion).
It comes with five thick sticks of crispy burdock root tempura (gobo ten). Some bites are perfectly crunchy, while others have soaked up the savory broth, turning fluffy and soft β€” a delightful contrast of textures!
It’s also generously topped with sweet-and-savory simmered beef, making it incredibly filling and flavorful!

Don’t miss the famous tabletop perk: free, all-you-can-add tororo kombu (shaved kelp) β€” a real treat for fans of umami flavor!

Curry Bukkake Udon β€” Β₯560 (add Β₯100 for a large portion).
If you’ve got a big appetite, here’s a clever trick: after finishing the udon, mix the leftover curry with white rice for a tasty curry-rice round two. Two meals in one!

Traveling with kids? The kids’ menu features both udon-and-curry sets and individual items. We ordered the Kids’ Udon Set for Β₯580.

Drinks: choose between orange or apple juice!
The broth is slightly sweet but nicely seasoned, and the noodles are soft and easy for little ones to eat β€” our child happily slurped up every last bite.

Children’s chairs are also provided β€” a real bonus for families. Ordering is done via touchscreen, and the food arrives super fast, so even hungry little ones won’t have to wait long.

Sukesan Udon’s signature botamochi (sweet rice cakes coated in red bean paste) are displayed at the entrance and available for takeout β€” a must-try Japanese sweet!

The takeout menu features a wide variety of options, perfect for grabbing a meal back to your hotel.

They even offer frozen takeout items β€” just heat them up at home or in your accommodation, and you can enjoy authentic restaurant-quality udon anytime, whether for lunch or a late-night snack.

Starting Monday, July 13, weekly specials kick off too! Be warned: this place draws long lines all day β€” proof that this udon is seriously worth the hype!
