Introducing LOHAS DAYS

Hello travelers! I’m Gachako, a writer for Sarukuma, your local guide to all things Kumamoto.
I heard exciting news that Kumamoto’s very first cold-pressed juice bar opened on April 27, 2022, so I had to check it out for myself!

Today I’m thrilled to introduce you to LOHAS DAYS, located in Ushimizu, Arao City.
【LOHAS DAYS】

You’ll find this gem nestled inside the Nakagawa Olive Garden.
There’s plenty of spacious parking available too.
The wide-open olive garden feels absolutely incredible. Could this really be Arao? It feels like a Mediterranean escape!

A breezy terrace with palm trees – what’s not to love?
The first thing I blurted out to the staff was, “This place feels amazing!”
The shop is run by a lovely husband-and-wife team.

Cold-pressed juice? What’s that exactly?
Since it was my first time, the owners kindly explained:

“Cold-pressed juice is made by applying powerful pressure to raw ingredients to extract the natural water and nutrients from vegetables. Unlike blenders, which generate heat through high-speed rotation, the cold-press method extracts juice without producing any heat – preserving more nutrients.”

The cold-press machine they use is seriously heavy (80 kg!), large, and requires a lot of effort to operate.
There’s no way I could make this at home, so I’ll happily buy it ready-made. And now there’s a place right here in Arao to get it – what a treat!

Here’s the menu:
Right: Green (900 yen) made with salad Chinese cabbage and komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach), Center: Red (900 yen) featuring beets – often called “edible blood transfusion” for their nutrient power, Left: Orange (850 yen) with a carrot base. (Prices may vary depending on ingredient sourcing.)
All vegetables are organically grown and carefully selected for seasonality.

The vibrant green, red, and orange colors are so striking, you’ll wonder if there really aren’t any additives!

LOHAS DAYS Recommended Menu

I tried the Red (Beet) Juice for 900 yen.
It’s pure beet goodness – no water, no added juice, just the natural moisture from the vegetables themselves.
You’ll taste beets’ distinctive earthy flavor, but that’s exactly where all the nutrients live.

I had originally planned to take it to-go, but the weather outside was so pleasant that I grabbed a terrace seat and ordered the Seasonal Vegetable Sandwich (700 yen) as well.
Grilled chicken and fresh vegetables are thoughtfully packed inside, with colorful zucchini that’s irresistibly appetizing.
The bread comes from local bakery Donguri no Ki, and it’s a hearty, crusty style.

Salt-cured olives and fresh herbs add a perfect accent, making this sandwich incredibly satisfying.
It was absolutely delicious.
I felt so refreshed by all that vegetable power!
If you’re visiting Kumamoto, be sure to add LOHAS DAYS to your itinerary.
