Getting to じゃぶじゃぶ池: Kumamoto’s Spring-Fed Wading Pond

Hi, I’m a writer for SaruKuma — Kumamoto’s guide for family outings! Today I’m visiting じゃぶじゃぶ池, a beloved natural wading pond in the Kamimizu Honmachi neighborhood of Chūō-ku, Kumamoto City.

With Kumamoto summers growing hotter every year, this natural spring pool tucked inside the city is exactly the kind of local secret worth knowing about.

Ezu Lake (江津湖) — Kumamoto City’s largest natural spring lake — feeds じゃぶじゃぶ池 with exceptionally pure groundwater. The water is filtered through volcanic geology formed by ancient eruptions of Mt. Aso, and the area has been officially recognized as one of Japan’s Heisei Meisui Hyakusen (平成の名水百選) — a curated list of 100 outstanding springs across the country.

Turn off the city tram (streetcar) route into the residential streets nearby and you’ll spot the parking lot almost immediately. The car park is open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The parking area has drink vending machines — and an ice cream vending machine, which becomes a very popular stop for tired, sun-warmed visitors on the way back to the car.

Visible right from the parking lot is a smaller, shallower pond — ideal for the tiniest visitors. Its gentle depth makes it a great choice for families with toddlers just finding their feet.

Cross to the other side of the parking lot and you reach じゃぶじゃぶ池 itself — the main attraction.

Restrooms are located about 70 meters from the parking lot. The accessible (multipurpose) restroom is on the ground floor; the standard facilities are up a short staircase on the second floor.

The multipurpose restroom is well-equipped for families: it has a child-sized toilet seat and a fold-down baby bed for diaper changes — a welcome detail for parents with infants.

Behind じゃぶじゃぶ池 is a spacious open area with benches and covered rest spots. When we visited, families had spread picnic sheets all through the shade-dappled grounds, making a full afternoon of it.

Ice-Cold and Crystal-Clear: Playing in the Spring Water

Does the clarity come through in the photo? The water is so transparent you can watch the springs themselves bubbling up from the sandy bed below. It’s genuinely mesmerizing to stand over.

And the temperature? Shockingly, gloriously cold. One moment you’re drenched in summer heat; the next you’re wading in what feels like ice water. Instant, full-body relief.

Trees line the water’s edge, casting deep shade so you stay cool even while you’re splashing around in the sun.

In the shallows the water is only 1–5 cm deep, so even sitting babies can join in safely. We spotted infants happily splashing while parents sat close beside them.

The deeper areas look more imposing than they are — even walking in as far as you can go, the water reaches only knee height on an adult. That said, always keep a close eye on children near the water.

The cold hits you hard at first — like plunging into ice water — but your body adjusts quickly, and before long it just feels wonderfully refreshing.

Once acclimatized, the fun really starts. Bring a swim ring and you can float along comfortably. Kids and adults alike end up lingering far longer than planned.

Highly recommended: pack goggles or a snorkel. Our writer’s son used his snorkel here and declared the underwater view “absolutely incredible” — the visibility really is that exceptional.

Wildlife Watching and Nature Conservation at Ezu Lake

Ezu Lake supports a rich community of aquatic creatures. Bring a small net and a bucket and you can turn the afternoon into a full nature lesson — endlessly engaging for curious kids.

The creatures are easy to find and observe up close — a highlight that surprises even adult visitors.

We came across a surprising variety of species during our visit.

One important note: Ezu Lake also has invasive non-native species mixed among the native wildlife. If you catch anything, please do not release it back into the lake — place it in the designated collection box on-site. It’s a small act that makes a real difference for the local ecosystem.

Notice boards around the lake also ask visitors to protect the local plant life. One species in particular — Himebaikamo (ヒメバイカモ), a delicate water buttercup that only thrives in ultra-pure spring water — is facing near-term extinction here. It exists in this spot precisely because of how clean the water is, so please take care not to disturb it when wading.

There’s even a rope swing tucked into the surrounding greenery — a charming little discovery in the middle of all that natural beauty.

Kumamoto summers show no sign of cooling down — so come find your cool, explore the nature, and let the whole family play in the spring water at じゃぶじゃぶ池.
