A Park Born from Kumamoto’s Earthquake

Hi — I’m Gacchako, a writer for SaruKuma, Kumamoto’s family-travel guide.

Today I’m introducing どんぐり広場, a brand-new park in Nishihara Village, Aso District.

The main multi-level play structure — three slides built into one complex, requiring arms, legs, and balance in equal measure.

Opened April 1, 2024, どんぐり広場 is one of Kumamoto’s newest public parks. The site has a quiet but powerful backstory: this land was used as temporary housing after the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes, a devastating sequence of tremors that displaced thousands of families. When the temporary housing was no longer needed, the community chose to turn the land into something forward-looking — a safe, joyful space where children can play freely.

The park sits right on the main road through Nishihara Village — easy to spot on the drive between Kumamoto City and the Aso caldera.

Because Nishihara Village sits directly on the route from Kumamoto City toward Aso and Takachiho, the park doubles as an ideal rest stop on a road trip. We stopped here ourselves en route to Takachiho — it was perfect for a restroom break and letting the kids stretch their legs before the mountain roads ahead.

The parking area is enormous — accessible spaces plus three numbered lots (Lot 1–3). Covered benches make it a pleasant spot to unpack a picnic lunch while the kids play.

Built with Care: Facilities and Inclusive Design

Handwashing station running clean Kumamoto groundwater. Kumamoto Prefecture is nationally celebrated for its pristine, soft spring water — even the tap here feels special.

Brand-new, bright, and genuinely clean restrooms — a genuine luxury at a free public park.

The entire park is enclosed by a fence, with every ground surface either artificial turf, packed earth, or rubber matting — a deliberate choice to protect kids who fall. The care in those details quietly says everything about this place.

Inclusive playground design — the equipment is built so that children with and without physical disabilities can play side by side. Suddenly the whole tone of the place makes perfect sense.

Next to どんぐり広場 stands Nishihara Village’s community gymnasium, with an open grass lawn stretching alongside it and artificial-turf tennis courts beyond. There’s far more space here than the park footprint suggests.

The adjacent community gymnasium and grass lawn — extra room to spread out a picnic blanket or kick a ball around while the kids work through the equipment.

Come for the Drive, Stay for the Slides

One unexpected bonus before we get to the playground itself: a Higo Bank ATM (Higo Bank is Kumamoto’s largest regional bank) is located right next door. If you’re heading deeper into the Aso countryside — where cash is often the only option — topping up here is genuinely useful.

The Higo Bank ATM just outside the park entrance — a practical lifesaver before you head into more rural Aso.

A toddler-scale climbing-and-hiding structure with a small slide — approachable for little ones who aren’t ready for the main event yet.

The flagship multi-level structure with three slides — climbing it demands real coordination, which is exactly why older kids love it.

The wavy, winding slide that had kids looping back for a fifth, sixth, seventh run. Seriously addictive.

A spinning roundabout that keeps going — the kind of equipment that tests your inner ear and puts a huge grin on every face in the vicinity.

Classic swings — a universal crowd pleaser, and these don’t disappoint.

The park is sized just right — not overwhelming, never cramped. Everyone in our group left fully satisfied, and it made for exactly the kind of great rest stop a long drive to Aso needs. As summer approaches, pack sun protection and keep an eye on hydration — but absolutely don’t let that hold you back from coming.
